Praise for GOOSEBUMPS WANTED: THE HAUNTED MASK

"...this book offers a great opportunity to rediscover what makes Stine so special: his swift characterizations, icky ideas, and prose that offers the exact right amount of cover-your-eyes detail." -Booklist

"Pure, Goosebumps–style terror-by-formula, polished through use to such a high gloss that it slides along frictionlessly–a worthy celebration of the series' 20th anniversary." -Kirkus Reviews

Great story for younger readers w/ Stine's classic touch
By FW
I'm going back to my roots with this one. I've been reading R.L. Stine as long as I can remember, and this story is a clear reminder of why.

Jackson Stander is almost too good to be true, he gets along with his family (except his sister), his teachers, does what he's told and even volunteers at a youth center. After spending a week with his grandfather--who apparently collects nearly everything including ventriloquist dummies--Jackson comes home to find a strange addition to his luggage. The ventriloquist dummy his grandfather called "Son of Slappy."

Veteran Goosebumps readers will be familiar with Slappy, the evil dummy that comes alive when the magic words are spoken to wreak havoc, but this is just a replica . . . right?

At times I wasn't completely sold on the family dynamic of the Standers. Jackson the perfect son that everyone loves, and his sister Rachel the troublemaker who wants nothing more than to see her brother get into trouble for something. In a way, her character was more relatable because of this--she seemed more honest. That's not to say that there aren't kids like Jackson, but it seemed like Rachel's acting out was founded in the fact that she was always viewed as inferior to Jackson.

As for the creepy factor of the story, it takes a while to get there--almost 30% through the book before the action begins, but once it does, it's a rush as Jackson struggles to break free from the dummy's spell.

Young audiences will enjoy R.L. Stine's story telling and his mastery of taking everyday objects and activities and turning them into something uncomfortable and creepy. For older readers, it may be a bit cheesy, but with Stine's talent, it's not hard to let the mind slip back and bask in the joy of seeing the world through a creepy lens.

Great book!
By Steven Bonner
Slappy is easily R.L. Stine's scariest and most evil character he has ever created, so I always try and grab all the new Slappy books that get released. I'm glad we are still getting new Goosebumps books in this day and age. This was the first Most Wanted book I read, and it was enjoyable. It sure was strange reading about getting text messages in a Goosebumps book. My, how times have changed. Either way, the story is different than what you see on the cover. There are not 2 Slappy dolls in this book. I won't spoil it for you, so you need to read it yourself. But basically, Slappy is back to his old demonic ways. On some possession type stuff. This book has no happy ending, so don't expect one. It's quite dark and twisted, especially for a kid to read it. But as an adult, I enjoyed it myself. It took me around 3 hours to read in total. If you are looking for a nice book to pass the time, give Son of Slappy a chance, as well as many of the other hundred Goosebumps books out there. R.L. Stine is 70 years old and is still pumping out these novellas. Great stuff, Stine! Thank you for all of your hard work.

Some Kids Are Too Young~~
By StarTraveler
CAUTION: My 7 yr old granddaughter and my friend's granddaughter of the same age both read above their grade level. They don't know each othrr and live in different states. They love Goosebumps, and the girls' parents were thrilled to see them become voracious readers. Unfortunately, Son Of Slappy was so realistic and thrilling that one child started having nightmares, and the other believes that her female baby doll is a boy in the wrong clothes and is possessed by Son Of Slappy. Not nearly as funny as it sounds.

This is not the fault of the author, nor of the parents. Developmentally speaking, kids have difficulty telling fact from fantasy, and Son Of Slappy (or any similarly creepy book) may be too mature a subject. My granddaughter still believes that movies must be real, and is on the cusp of grasping the concept of fiction vs nonfiction.

Just because your child has the skills to read at a certain level doesn't mean that the subject matter is age-appropriate. If she is asking the same questions we all did about "Is this real?" you may want to put Son Of Slappy off for a year or two. At age 9 my son read Goosebumps and never had a problem. But to my granddaughter, Son Of Slappy is really, truly real, and he's lurking at the back of her closet, dressed in baby girl clothes. She beheaded it.
