Excellent Clinical Reference

As a busy clinical otolaryngologist in Lutherville Maryland, who is called upon to render opinions on all manner of oral lesions, I am pleased to finally have a comprehensive reference to make my practice more precise and treatment rendered more effective. This book is very well illustrated and provides an in-depth yet telegraphic approach to the wide range of oral pathology that is encountered in the general clinical practice of ENT. I recommend this well referenced book to all of us in allopathic medicine, who are not extensively trained in benign oral lesions,but are in need of a cogent answer to the question "Hey Doc look at this and tell me what you think it is?". I liked it, but ...

Alex De Luca was just a teenager when she lied and sent her friend, Rafe Mason, an innocent man, to prison for eight years. Instead of speaking up and doing the right thing, she let him rot in a cell while his hatred for her grew into something uncontrollable.

Now he's out on parole and he has only one objective. To break her in a way that she broke him. He wants her screams, her tears, and he wants to see her shatter into millions of pieces.

Honestly, this is a difficult book for me to review. A part of me disliked it while another part of me was sucked into everything that was happening. I'm not a stranger to darker reads and I rather enjoy stepping outside of my comfort zone and getting truly engrossed in a good work of fiction.
The emotions that this kind of story tends to draw out of me are usually quite strong. They range from anger, disgust, acceptance, and it really forces me to try and understand just what made a character the way that they are.

Now there is a warning that Torrent features sexual scenes and violence that may offend some. I'm pretty sure we all know to expect something like that from a darker read. However, I know that some people have triggers and I want to let you know that there is rape between step-siblings in this book. If that hits home for you and will trigger a horrific memory, then you may want to pass on this one.

I did find it really hard to feel for Alex. I understand, to an extent, why she did what she did. But honestly, her actions once she was kidnapped baffled me. There wasn't enough of their past in this first book to make me form a connection. To make me understand how she could care for Rafe as he was hurting her. Torturing her. Violating her.

If I really reflect on the situation I can see where Rafe was coming from. He cared for a girl who essentially threw him away and let him rot for eight years. Things happen when you're locked up that change you. He had a lot of time to allow his anger to turn into an inferno like rage that would destroy everything around it, and of course he had his eyes set on one girl in particular.

This was a really quick read for me. There were some areas of the story that I felt like the execution was a little off, but Gemma's writing is captivating enough that I was able to overlook that fact.

I will admit that the ending drove me absolutely CRAZY. Not because it's a cliffhanger. I have no issues with those kinds of endings. However, I found the change of direction in the very last chapter to feel more like a cop-out than anything.

Overall I would have to give Torrent 3 stars. It wasn't what I was expecting, and I do hope to see more character development and more glimpses into their past.

So bad, I refused to waste another moment reading it!

First of all, the whole set up was too ridiculous to believe. Alex was being raped by her step brother, forced to have an abortion, forced to claim Rafe, the love of her life had raced her and forced to remain quiet while he gets convicted and spends 8 years in prison. All the while she continues to be the unwilling submissive to her step brother. Rafe gets out, kidnaps Alex and then he begins to rape her all while trying to find out why she accused him.

Alex and Rafe were not well fleshed out. Too many character contradictions. He loves her but hates her...well okay that could be done but the author just didn't pull it off. The poor little rich girl syndrome just didn't work. The dialogue didn't work, the sex scenes didn't work.

I stopped reading when towards the end, Rafe and the step brother Zach duke it out and some preposterously stupid moves are made. I cannot tolerate stupid characters doing stupid things.

Don't waste your time or money. This was very poorly written story of a very poorly thought out plot.

Waste of $2.99!

I don't know what possessed me to buy this book! (Okay, okay, I admit, the cover had a lot to do with it! ; P) I expected more from this book and was pretty disappointed with the whole thing. The storyline was completely ridiculous, I couldn't stand Alex at all because of how spineless she was and the ending was lame. Even though it ended on a cliffhanger it was so obvious what was going to happen I don't feel the need to buy book two. I'm wishing I hadn't spent the $2.99 on this book because it was a waste of my time and money!

Horrendous attempt to spice up geometry with pretty colors

As a math tutor, I didn't think I could find a geometry textbook I disliked more than "Discovering Geometry" by Michael Serra. Then I encountered this book. (Specifically, I have seen the Michigan version, but in my experience, the state-by-state variation among different versions of the same textbook is relatively minimal.)

Geometry by Larson, Boswell, et al is disorganized and dizzying. In short, it is simply horrendous. It is so replete with dazzling colors and uninformative pictures that I can hardly find the theorems. (It's like a "Where's Waldo?" of theorems and postulates.) By contrast, the Jurgensen book may look dry, but the authors conservatively reserve color to bring your attention to the most important information, such as theorems you should memorize. Larson, et al could really learn something from the more "boring" geometry books of years past.

Just do a chapter-by-chapter comparison with the Jurgensen book, and you'll realize how much material is omitted from this book that used to be taught in geometry classes 20 years ago. This book is poorly organized and doesn't even teach basic constructions. Also, the index, glossary, and other reference materials at the back of the book are not very well formatted. Anyone comparing this book with an older geometry book from 15 or 20 years ago will understand why many veteran math teachers bemoan such watered-down textbooks and why so many college freshmen have to take remedial high school mathematics to learn topics they should have covered before entering college.

Furthermore, it weighs a ton! I chalk that up to the number of useless photographs and graphics in it. (I find the quality of a textbook is inversely proportional to the number of fancy pictures in it.) The Jurgensen book packs far more information in it at a fraction of the weight or volume. The book is a prime example of a textbook with a lot of filler and very little meat. In short, I would never recommend this book to a student.

First off, I'm very glad that I got this from the library and didn't waste my money.
This book hardly justifies a 12 year wait for some fans. 3 years, in my case. It's boring, repetitive, and doesn't even offer anything significant to justify its incredible length.
What about all the buildup, the incredible conflict we expected? What about Zolena, Jondalar's former lover, being a possible factor between Ayla and Jondalar? Nope, she has to be incredibly fat and thus sexually undesirable, an effectively neutered woman. Jondalar's former fiancee is portrayed as completely rabid and malicious, when she's more than entitled to a little resentment of Ayla and Jondalar. The man *jilted* her, after all. But no, if you dislike Ayla, that makes you rotten to the core.
The Zelandoni prejudice against the people of the Clan that we were all so afraid of? Dealt with in one tiny scene wherein all Zelandoni are ooing and ahhing over Ayla's sign language. Give me a break. That's disgustingly unreal, and a disgrace after all the hype about it for the past three books.
The "villains" are cardboard stereotypes. Those who aren't immediately enthralled by Ayla we *surprisingly* find are bad, evil people. I'm in mind of Frebec from "MH" here...he was a fully developed quasi-villain whose transformation was within the realms of belief. No such luck here. They're totally bad and have the utter gall to try and humiliate or hurt dear Ayla.
Ayla makes no faux pas, saves every situation with perfect panache, enchants everybody despite her having been raised by (and having had sex with) "animal flatheads". (Which everybody conveniently accepts despite long-standing prejudice that's been harped on for the past three books.) In fan fiction there is a word for a beautiful, incredibly talented, and universally liked perfect young woman. It's a "Mary Sue", and it is not a complimentary term.
Ayla's lost all depth she had in "Cave Bear" to become the original Cro-Magnon Mary Sue, perfect in every way. Every Paleolithic (and some Neolithic!) innovation can apparently be traced to her somehow: the atlatl (spear thrower), iron pyrite as a fire striker, animal domestication, the needle, the concept of conception via sexual intercourse being just a few.
I'm just waiting for her to invent the wheel. Though she probably will as First Among Those Who Serve the Mother (come on, you know she'll have the spot soon enough.) I much prefer the uncertain, definitely flawed and definitely human Ayla of "CotCB" instead of this prissy, power-hungry, perfect and boring woman. Give us a normal woman with fears, flaws, and all, instead of this laughable, inane Super-Ayla.
Jondalar is also disgustingly perfect, though he's basically just Ayla's stud and bodyguard. I'm also amused by the fact that the copious, purple-prosed love scenes seem to portray him as merely a one-trick pony. (So much for his prowess in the furs). This increasing trend towards nauseating perfection has annoyed me slightly since it began in "VoH" and has increased steadily with every book. Perhaps Thonolan should have survived that cave lion attack in Jondalar's place...
The characters have become cardboard, mere shadows of what they could have been, should have been. What they were promised to be when we first met them and they enchanted us. Many good books have been ruined with multiple steadily more awful sequels. Laurie R. King's "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" is one. "The Clan of the Cave Bear" is another. Ms. Auel should have left it at the end of "CotCB" and been remembered for that splendid masterpiece instead of cranking out ever worsening tripe *ad nauseum*, justifying it by, "It continues the storyline."
How about Ayla being an outcast from Zelandoni society because of her past? How about that causing strife with Jondalar, torn between love and his people? That was the book we should have received, the book that previous volumes promised us. Instead we find the couple happily married and accepted, with unquestioned incredibly high status, showering benevolence and help upon all who are needy. Is this supposed to be a parody, a farce?
This book has no conflict. This book has no action. This book has positively no character development. This book practically deconstructs any good done in "CotCB" and "VoH". In fact, this book has absolutely *nothing* to justify spending 28 dollars and 12 years of anticipation. Any first-time writer sending this in would be firmly rejected and laughed at. "SoS" indeed--very apt. Send out the distress call and load the lifeboats, because this one plummets to the bottom fast under the weight of its own bloated self-importance. A solid F.

Repetition, repetition, repetition

Did I mention repetition?
I came away feeling somewhat lukewarm towards this much-anticipated book. Definitely, there were enjoyable parts to it, even parts that moved me to tears.
However, this book had a much different pace to it than what I've come to expect from this series. For every event, it reviewed experiences from the earlier books in tiresome detail. Later in the book, it even reviewed experiences that happened in the first part of the book.
And, really, how many times did we have to read about the people's first reaction to meeting Wolf, Whinney, and Racer? Yes, the animals were new to the people, but they were not new to the readers. Recounting the same reaction from the dozens of people that met the animals as well as the never-ending recitation of all the formal names and ties of the characters made for tedious reading.
I'll admit to skipping the long narratives to get to the action. In the earlier books I was fascinated at Ms. Auel's extraordinary talent of setting the scene with lots of rich details. In this book, it just seemed to make the story plod, maybe because I had read most of it before.
This book is a definite, if somewhat disappointing, read for those that have been captivated by this series. I find myself eagerly awaiting the next book. I only hope the author once again warms to her subject and the plot instead of relying on page-fillers from past books.

Poorly written, narcolepsy inducing, Ayla Sue wankfest

My mom bought this book to read on a plane trip after reading the previous novels, and since I had also read them, she gave it to me after she was finished. Here for the first time I'm going to break one of my own personal rules and review a book that I didn't finish. I've read many hefty books with higher page counts in my time. Why didn't I finish Shelters of Stone? Because it's so drop dead boring, and because the main character's extreme Mary Sue-ish 'qualities' have really started to grate on my nerves.

I enjoyed Clan of the Cave Bear the best, since then things have been all downhill. With this book, things have fallen very far indeed. As other reviews have mentioned, there's an unbearable amount of repetition, not just of previous volumes, but repetition within the book itself. I'd be fine with it if it only happened once and then was skipped or abridged in later explinations, but no... We have to suffer through the complete retelling of everything every time. How many times can a reader suffer through the discovery of firestones without slitting their wrists with one? Now we know.

I gave up reading about halfway through, because nothing happened. And I mean really, nothing happened. Nada. Zip. They got to Jondalar's home. Everyone is over the fact that Ayla was raised by 'flatheads' in record time, wasting a plot point that had been built up in the last three books and turning it into a barely there afterthought. Anticlimactic is an understatement. Ayla gets introduced, gets tricked into wearing inappropriate clothing and there's a hunt. That's it. It took around 250 pages to get to this point. I've read better books that were over in fewer pages.

Then there's Ayla. A good 95% of the characters in the book (I hesitate to say 'story' because there really isn't one) seems to exist just to remark on how amazing she is. Repeatedly. Everyone she meets just has to swoon and realize how she's wonderful and gorgeous and smart and gosh just isn't she so darn peachy keen? Except, of course, they're supposed to be a villain, and then they just hate her on sight for no reason. Maybe they have a point though, because I've started to actively dislike her myself. Ayla never does anything wrong. Never makes mistakes that cause problems, never suffers from jealousy, never wishes that the perpetrators of a cruel practical joke played on her would fall off a cliff, never feels overwhelmed at all the people she's suddenly having to face, and is just the bestest ever at everything she ever tries to do. She just prances around the tundra acting like some kind of prehistoric female Thomas Edison celebrity superstar, complete with adoring groupie squad.

Speaking of the adoring groupie squad, what the heck happened to Jondalar? Over the course of three books he's gone from being at least an interesting (if overly angsty and guilt ridden) love interest to some kind of Ayla bodyguard/yes man/body temperature dildo. In fact, the only reason he's notable in this book is by his absence, mentally if not physically. The only time he has any input anymore is when it's in relation to Ayla. You'd think he'd be conflicted, or at least a little nervous about introducing a strange woman who's been raised by people that his relatives consider little better than animals, but no... He stumbles through SoS almost as an accessory to Ayla. The name Jonayla could almost fit Jondalar himself in this book.

Do yourself a favor. Avoid this book unless what you're looking for is a cure for insomnia.

I couldn't put it down!!!

I loved this book. I loved the chemistry between Trent and Clark. I loved how Trent didn’t realize how Clark felt about him until Brad stole Clark’s computer and published his love letter all over campus. I loved how Clark helped Trent with his swing and that they were best friends. I love how sure Trent is about his feelings when he finally figures out what his feeling are. I can’t wait to read more books by Tabatha Austin. I received this free book in exchange for an honest review.
Here is a synopsis of the book. After Clark's jock friend (and secret crush) Trent continues striking out at bat, Clark comes up with a baseball formula for near perfect hits. Now every baseball scout, reporter, and player wants to know how Trent handles his balls so well. They have no idea it's all thanks to his nerdy friend Clark, whose equation for the perfect swing turned him from a benchwarmer into a walk-off hero. And they really don't know that Clark has a crush on Trent. In fact, neither does Trent himself - that is, until an unsent love letter from Clark's stolen computer gets leaked to the entire school. Can Clark recover from the embarrassment and why is Trent striking out again?

Short & corny

I was okay with this short story, at first. I give it points for a unique storyline as far as the part where Clark helps Trent improve his game play. However, as the story progressed, 2 things worsened: the editing and the corny, cheesy dialogue. By the time Clark was telling Trent to "grip his bat" I wanted to throw my Kindle at something. Outside of that, there wasn't enough to make the MCs likeable, IMO. The book ends at 85%. From then until 98% is a preview of the next book in the series. This wasn't good enough to make me go looking for it, though.

I am a sucker for good geek story and this one definitely qualifies! Clark is just so adorable and Trent sounds like the perfect man. I can't wait to read the next installment. Even though it is a short story, it's definitely worth it!

Mind Blowing!

I dove into this book head first & can not stop reading it. The print is very small which is hard on my aging eyes and I really study the pictures. There are many! So far I have told about 15 + people about this book--and now all you. I have not finished it yet--but I have been engrossed in all the documentation, cross references, and archival research! I love real history with concrete facts. Totally mind blowing!

One of a precious few

- "Antiquity is full of the praises of another Antiquity still more remote", says Voltaire (quote on p.7). Authors Zapp and Erikson go to great lengths in order to show us that the Antiquity of the Golden Age, as extolled by magniloquent poets and ancient philosophers and as described in our global treasury of myths, was not the mere fruit of the imagination of "pre-scientific humans" or even the outpourings of some hypothetical "collective unconscious", but existed de facto. On little under 400 pages readers are presented with a most impressive array of cultural and archaeological evidence for the existence of prehistoric seafaring civilizations spanning the entire earth - though each would have had its own center - and living in relative harmony for millennia on end.
However, since the evidence presented falls within a range of quite ambitious proportions and the material is very heterogeneous, Zapp and Erikson have not been able to analyze and discuss it thoroughly; references are few for the breathtaking number of claims the authors make, and one misses a more consistently concomitant exposition of the old-paradigmatic views and interpretations of mainstream archaeologists, though this would of course bore some readers terribly and also have doubled or tripled the size and price of the book. The way it is, readers will have to take the evidence at face value and suspend a definitive judgment until after the authors' suggestions - exceedingly fertile - have been meditated on and possibly backed up by independent research/reading.
Archaeology is in itself not enough to make prehistory come alive before our eyes. Though considered irrelevant by those educated in a strictly materialistic and rationalistic worldview, tools such as spiritual insight or religious experience, intuition, synderesis, Platonic anamnesis and a solid cultural background are indispensable for correctly appreciating who our ancestors were and what they were capable of. This has nothing to do whatsoever with romanticizing the past or with imposing extravagant and feeble-minded vagaries upon the unknown. Our ancestors were fully human (in fact, we don't seem to compare favorably to them ourselves) and therefore possessed the characteristics by which the human being is safely distinguished from all other creatures, namely transcendental intellect, free will and theomorphic constitution. It is time we give up the childish, chronocentric outlook by which we keep judging older periods as inferior to our own, and rid our minds of the silly association of technology with human excellence, as if even the lowliest elements of true culture stood a chance of surviving under the oafish influence of an all-encompassing, technology-obsessed society (see comments on p.181).
Though Zapp and Erikson warn us not to fall into the traps of evolutionary-inspired preconceptions about the primitiveness of prehistoric people and remind us of the mechanisms by which weak or even opportunistic theories are formulated and then kept intact by political, academic and religious forces (e.g. see p.56 about how Beringia came into being in 1590), they cannot avoid contamination entirely themselves and seem to go on placing Java Man and the australopithecines somewhere in our family album and thinking the Middle Ages (800-1300 A.D) a time of darkness and savagery. Their caustic criticism of the Catholic Church (e.g. p.284) may at first seem justified, but is actually very simplistic and completely ignores the many centuries of sanctity and intellectual achievements evidenced within the spiritual framework of Christian Europe (both Orthodox and Catholic). The authors seem to have missed a great deal of the complexity of a culture that was capable of accomodating such disparate characters as Cortez and Saint Catherine of Siena.
However, in view of the central theme of the book, certain heedless statements (and some cases of rash compromise with modern and highly unstable scientific theories and claims - Chaos science, unreliable dating techniques, etc) are made up for by a multitude of excellent notes on knotted chords (p.25-7), astronomical observatories vs. agricultural clocks (p.53), scientific claims inherited from theology (p.57), the eminence-of-initial-excavation principle (p.61), Clovis man vs. Pleistocene fauna extinction (p.81), NDT-based preconceptions (p.98), mythmaking and precision measurement (p.183), cyclical time and qualitative numbers (p.225-6), astrology vs. astronomy (p.233), erosion of the sphinx (p.266), ocean travel experiments (p.295-8), resistance to imported concepts (p.336), apart from a vast amount of general archaeological data.
But why exactly did I say this otherwise poorly organized book was "one in a precious few"? Because it approaches the issue of prehistoric Atlantis without attributing ancient achievements everywhere to extraterrestrial interventions, without trying to portray the Atlanteans as lovers of a technology which has left no trace, without trying to squeeze every sign of civilization in the Americas into a post-Sumerian-pre-Columbian time gap, and without supposing peoples of the past would have accepted every glass bead they were shown as a blessing. Cultures are shown to tend to start out not "jumbo-sized" but intellectually full-fledged and then, as they grow older, decline; myth is shown to be an adequate way of expressing and preserving cosmology and other sciences, the Atlantean life style is shown to be highly recommendable even for the humans of today, and people everywhere and everywhen (again modern man may be an exception) are shown to be brave, inventive and for the most part perfectly aware of what is good for them and what is not. And, whatever the book's minor flaws, that's good enough for five stars and a great read!

too much ranting

The authors kept on giving the same speech over and over again about the academic establishment. The constant ranting should have been handled once in the intro and then the authors should have gone on and made there point. It's to bad because when the authors actually focus on there interesting theory they have a potentually good book unfortunately they love to give there speech to much.
