Packed with info. Covers all of the bases for a piano student.
By Michelle Rayburn
I will preface this review by saying I am a piano teacher, and I know a thing or two about teaching and about pianos and keyboards. This book is packed with info. There is also online tools that can be accessed with the URLs throughout the book next to a symbol for "Play This." The online tracks and clips have audio related to the teaching topic.

There are also some online articles and cheat sheets available.

The first part of the book is about keyboards, purchasing, learning features, posture, and the mechanics of playing.

The second part features beginning music lessons that covers the technical stuff that is part of reading sheet music. Counting note values, learning the letter names of notes, and getting to know the layout of sheet music is important. Some beginners may be hoping to play actual music sooner and may get frustrated with the pace. This is a very complete summary of music theory. Where this differs from traditional piano lesson methods is that it gives all of the theory up front and the student must study it almost like one would school homework. In traditional lessons, we would cover these concepts gradually, along with learning to play notes on the piano at the same time. It's more satisfying for most students to play keys sooner rather than later.

The third part of the book begins to teach how to play. If a student can remember the notes learned in the other part of the book, he or she can begin to play from the music notes in this part. However, it may take a lot of flipping back and forth between this and the previous section to put it all together. It moves quickly through different hand positions, where traditional lessons would camp out for a few weeks on one position before introducing a new one.

In addition, this section covers more theory, such as scale degrees. This would normally be introduced quite a ways into piano lessons, rather than at the beginning. Covers key signatures, minor scales, intervals, and the circle of 5ths, for those who know musical lingo and want to know if it's covered in the book. It also covers the formation of chords and chord theory.

In the 4th part of the book, it covers dynamics, tempo, pedal, and other special artistic accents. It teaches how to fill out the left hand accompaniment using the right hand chords, or a lead sheet. It teaches blues chord progressions, country style and more in this section.

In the 5th part of the book, it teaches technique. These are exercises to get the fingers cooperating and some of them are like Hanon's exercises or Finger Power books that get the hand-eye coordination going, and improves technique. This is a larger part of the book than some sections.

The 6th part of the book covers some special effects that can be added with electric keyboards. It talks about mixing and digital recording. Also covers MIDI.

My analysis: For the very self-motivated person, this might be a potential way to teach oneself how to play piano, but there is still a lot more that a real live teacher would include. I'm in favor of teaching oneself, so I'm not biased in that way. I'm just worried that this is a bit overwhelming for a beginner.

However, this is also a book packed full of the most important technical information a piano player would need. If I was studying for a college entrance exam, I might use something like this as a means of checking to see I understood the basics. It would also be a great handbook to have alongside traditional lessons.

I found it a little odd when in the second chapter, the authors featured a whole page of photos of electric pianos that were popular in the1960s, 70s and 80s. And then there was so little about the modern digital keyboards that most piano players will use. Just my opinion. At first I thought they might be severaly outdated in their information. But, after that, the book gave a very complete instructional process for buying and getting to know a keyboard in the next chapter. That referred to modern keyboards, so they redeemed my opinion in chapter 3.

All in all, I would recommend this book for my students as a handbook to use along with our lesson materials.

Sometimes, less is more
By Eric Sedensky
As a musician of varying sorts for over forty years, including a church organist, rock keyboardist, and now would-be jazz pianist, my experience with keyboards in general and pianos in specific is intermediate to advanced. Still, I'm always eager to learn more and having only played piano for seven years now, that is usually where I focus my energies of late, both studying piano music, and playing and performing on the piano. For that reason and as luck would have it, not only have I read three of the four books contained in this one, I still have two of them in my possession. That made it easy for me to compare this "4 in 1" book with the originals and size it up in what is (I hope) a meaningful manner.

The first thing I noticed is although this book claims to be four books in one, the publishers did not simply combine the existing books using their individual volume formats. A serious attempt to edit and consolidate was made with this book, making it flow very smoothly while also making it much more comprehensive and useful. While it is true that the bulk of the material is more or less re-printed as is, nearly all of the material has revamped titles and overlapping material has been shortened or eliminated. Since I could not refer to all the originals (and indeed, had not read the music theory volume until I got this book), I can't say for sure how much of each book made it into this compendium, but I can say that the material is very well-organized now, and does not rely on any one book (or two) at the expense of the others. Overall, the information is stacked and dense, but it remains cleverly laid out, marked with various "dummies" icons, and maintains all the usefulness these books are known for. For somebody new to keyboards and pianos but serious about learning more and becoming a proficient player, it will be hard to find a better book than this for a starting point.

One huge difficulty is the performance pieces and printed music. As I said in my review of Piano Exercises For Dummies, the musical print is too small for my 50-ish eyes, and I resorted to transcribing the pieces I wanted to play to a music program so that they could be printed out in a much larger, clearer print. Unfortunately, this compendium volume has gone to even smaller pages but maintained the wide margin format of the original. The result is the music pages are even smaller than before, and for me, much less approachable. Also, now that they are organized differently so that the exercises that teach various techniques are moved to where those techniques are explained and illustrated, the performance pieces are scattered all around the book. Anyone trying to play the music pieces with therefore have to deal with the glued spine binding not lying flat, and even breaking the spine will not affect the pieces appearing dozens of pages away. That is to say, the Dummies series' weakest point is now even weaker, and the printed music pages in this book are the hardest yet to use.

In the end, I think a lot of readers will be better served by this compendium volume, as the point of the dummies series has always been to make a good start, and now, someone thinking about taking up keyboards, piano, or music in general will be able to learn about all three and make an informed decision about what to pursue. At the very least, having all this information in one volume is easier to carry around, simpler to work through, and cheaper. I wasn't sure I could give this five stars because of the tiny printed music pages, but I think there are enough work arounds for that, and I also think the efforts of the editors to provide a tighter and more resourceful manual that even though it is slimmed down, contains the crucial information about its subject should be applauded, so I decided that five stars was the way to go.

Excellent resource to have - whether you are a 'dummy' or not!
By MS
While the first section of the book is really intended for 'dummies' - things like what to look for when buying a piano/digital keyboard, the later sections cover all the required material all the way from beginner to an intermediate level. There are several things I like about this book and should have given 5 stars for it, but:
1. End of the day, you can't learn everything from a book - need direct practice and some instruction time from a professional teacher (unless you are a born genius, of course!). This book can take you only so far. After that you still need to practice a lot and also get some face time with some pros/teachers.
2. More importantly, I feel there are less exercises and simpler examples at the beginning. The toughest part of learning something new is in the basic stages. That part should be really taken slow, with lots and lots examples/exercises. You can never overdo that. While this book does try to cover a lot of ground, still not enough for the early stage, IMHO.
3. Nitpicking: the print for the music could have been a little bit bigger.

In spite of that, this is one of the 'must have' books you should have handy, as it provides lot of valuable information, pointers to references for further learning, and website access to all the songs for you to listen and practice while reading this book.

For those of you who want to learn without a teacher, there are some software in the market, that can connect your notebook to a digital piano/keyboard through USB/MIDI cables, and such software can guide you real time with playing songs, track if you pressed the right key or not, within the tempo or not, etc. I believe such a software along with this book will get me more complete instruction than otherwise.

We’ve been led to believe that when we get sick, it’s our genetics. Or it’s just bad luck—and doctors alone hold the keys to optimal health. Therefore when Dr. Lissa Rankin’s own health started to suffer, she turned to Western medical treatments, but what she found was that they not only failed to help; they made her worse. So she decided to take matters into her own hands.
Through her research, Dr. Rankin discovered that the health care she had been taught to practice was missing something crucial: a recognition of the body’s innate ability to self-repair and an appreciation for how we can control these self-healing mechanisms with the power of the mind. To better understand this phenomenon, she explored peer-reviewed medical literature and found evidence that the medical establishment had been proving that the body can heal itself for over 50 years.
Using extraordinary cases of spontaneous healing, Dr. Rankin shows how thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can alter the body’s physiology. She lays out the scientific data proving that loneliness, pessimism, depression, fear, and anxiety damage the body, while intimate relationships, gratitude, meditation, sex, and authentic self-expression flip on the body’s self-healing processes.
In this book, you’ll find a radical new wellness model based on Dr. Rankin’s scientific findings. Her unique six-step program will help you uncover where things might be out of whack in your life—spiritually, creatively, environmentally, nutritionally, and in your professional and personal relationships—so that you can create a customized treatment plan aimed at bolstering these health-promoting pieces of your life. You’ll learn how to listen to your body’s “whispers” before they turn to life-threatening “screams” that can be prevented with proper self-care, and you’ll learn how to trust your inner guidance when making decisions about your health and your life.
By the time you finish Mind Over Medicine, you’ll have made your own Diagnosis, written your own Prescription, and created a clear action plan designed to help you make your body ripe for miracles.

Review
“What a pleasure it is to see the next generation of physicians waking up to what I call real medicine—the kind that acknowledges our true power to heal and be well.”— Christiane Northrup, M.D., OB/GYN physician and author of the New York Times bestsellers: Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause
“In this book, Lissa Rankin clearly states what many health care providers (not to mention patients) already know: the way our society’s physicians are trained, pressured, and overworked is in many ways inimical to the process of healing. In her life, her work, and her words, Dr. Rankin demonstrates a new way to combine the brilliance of modern science with the wisdom of the heart. Anyone who will ever need a doctor, and certainly anyone who will ever be a doctor, will be enriched and enlightened by her ideas. Just reading Mind Over Medicine is a genuinely healing experience.”— Martha Beck, Ph.D., author of Finding Your Way in a Wild New World
“Being my own inner physician for years means that I’m SUPER thrilled about Dr. Lissa Rankin’s brilliant new book, Mind Over Medicine. She marries intuition with science and shows us all our healing SUPERPOWERS, and how to live our lives this way. And, Lissa’s writing style is so exuberant and deep at the same time, it makes me feel like I can do handstands on the ocean!”— SARK, author of 16 books, artist, and founder of PlanetSARK.com
“Mind Over Medicine modernizes age old messages of wisdom and makes them easier to understand and apply to modern day lifestyles. This book contains much wisdom in easy-to-apply lessons we can all learn from.”— Bernie Siegel, M.D., author of Love, Medicine & Miracles
“With humor, warmth, and compelling research, Dr. Lissa Rankin’s Mind Over Medicine begins to heal the most critical fracture of our time—the break between our mind, bodies, and spirit. When it comes to our physical and emotional health, we need to tap into our own wisdom and find our voices. Lissa’s passion and experiences make her the perfect guide for this journey.”— Brené Brown, Ph.D., New York Times best-selling author of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead
“Lissa Rankin is a modern day miracle worker with a message the world needs to hear.”— Chris Guillebeau, New York Times best-selling author of The $100 Startup “Dr. Lissa Rankin is a jet-powered force of vibrant health and happiness, for women in the world today. This book is vital. It is the first time a physician has written on behalf of the health of the whole body and soul of woman. She identifies the how to’s of optimum health in every aspect of a woman’s life. It is not only a must-read, it is an urgent, required read!”— Regena Thomashauer (a.k.a. “Mama Gena”), author of Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts
“‘Body and spirit are twins: God only knows which is which,’ Swinburne wisely said more than a century ago. But for most of the twentieth century, the body has hogged the show. Now consciousness, mind, and spirit are back in center stage in medicine. In Mind Over Medicine, Dr. Lissa Rankin shows why. This is a compelling, clear, and reader-friendly vision of where medicine and healing are headed, written by an expert medical insider who’s been there. Buy two copies—one for you and one for your doctor.”— Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Reinventing Medicine, Healing Words, and One Mind
“WOW! Just wow! That is how I feel about Lissa Rankin’s work! Everything she says rings so true to me, and her voice, as a professional medical doctor, is just what is needed in today’s drug dependent society. Bravo, Lissa for having the courage to speak out and share your truth. This world needs more like you!”— Anita Moorjani, New York Times best-selling author of Dying to Be Me
“An extraordinary, evidence-based look at the true impact of mindset and lifestyle on pain, disease, and vitality. An M.D. herself, Rankin takes on the establishment from the inside out, building a compelling argument for a new approach to health and healing that puts the patient in the driver’s seat. Prepare to have your mind blow . . . and your body healed.”— Jonathan Fields, author of Uncertainty and founder of the Good Life Project
“A doctor championing mega-doses of introspection, love, and liberation. A route to health that includes your DNA and your heart’s desire? I’m in! Lissa Rankin sheds scientific and mystical light on our ability to self-heal. She is a doctor for those of us who know in our bones that vitality is ours for the making.”— Danielle LaPorte, author of The Fire Starter Sessions
“In a world plying pharmaceutical solutions to all our problems, Dr. Lissa Rankin is an oasis of sanity. The deep attention and intimacy of her approach infuses medicine with intuitive insight and turned-on vitality. Lissa redefines healthcare, calling us to activate our own power in service of true well-being—I’m in!”— Nicole Daedone, founder of OneTaste and author of Slow Sex: The Art and Craft of the Female Orgasm

“This book is a wonderful, practical guide to heal yourself and stay positive. Dr. Rankin has compiled pertinent scientific research to support the incredible wisdom behind making healthy life style and attitude changes to enhance your health and vibrance. She honors mind, body, and spirit in the healing process.”
—  Judith Orloff MD, author of Emotional Freedom

- From Publisher's Weekly:
“Recent diatribes against the forthcoming DSM-5 have called for medical professionals to put down the book from time to time and look patients in the eye. Rankin takes it one step further and tells folks to look inside themselves to heal themselves, both mentally and physically.  After years of working in a traditional medical setting and dealing with her own failing health, Rankin undertook extensive research into the medical literature of the past 50 years and discovered the true power of an optimistic outlook on the body’s ability to heal itself. But it’s difficult work being an optimist- it requires faith in one’s ability to heal, and it necessitates a serious attitude adjustment. As such- and always with the skeptics in mind- Rankin walks readers through self-assessment techniques, methods of self-diagnosis, and how to plan a “prescription” for going forward. She does not dismiss the benefits of modern medicine; rather, she urges patients and health care providers to seek mind and body solutions in order to secure the best care possible. Rankin’s insightful and compassionate treatise may not convince everyone, but it’s a refreshing alternative to a handful of pills.”

This book is a game changer for your health
By Ken Jaques
My thoughts are that the material in this book truly leads us to shift our thinking about how we look at our health and illness, and REMEMBER the body's innate ability to help heal itself. It contains a wealth of information, as well as practical approaches for you to develop your own personal approach to your health and happiness. I would go so far as to suggest that this book should form part of a curriculum for students from early ages where subconscious beliefs and programming are first formed, right through to medical school. Anyone diagnosed with a health condition, anyone "worried" that they might be predisposed to a condition, or anyone simply looking to maintain their existing good health can benefit from reading this book.

The information Dr. Rankins presents may not all be new news, but its powerfully expressed and the time is right. People, like myself and most likely anyone reading this, are searching for answers on how to live healthy and simply. The answer of course is that we have everything we need inside us it just takes an eloquent author to tell us that! A book that has helped me realize the power of self-expression to self-heal is Art and Healing by Barbara Ganim.

What makes Mind Over Medicine so different from the other books is that she provides information that is grounded in scientific study from mainstream medical journals in accessible language. She challenges the Western medicine culture without disparaging it. Instead, she advocates the power of positive thinking, proactive self-care, and seeing wellness with an open mind. I wish there was an index, but she organizes her case well into three sections:

1) Evidence of mind-body connection
2) Areas in the body where the mind can create healing, which includes the real physiology/mechanics of what goes on in the body
3) Methods to change your belief systems and habits to a personal health prescription

Life-Changing Book--Everything You Want To Know About Mind-Body Medicine Without The "Woo-Woo"
By O. Merce Brown
*****
This cutting-edge book is unique in its mission--the author (a conventional medical doctor who has left her mainstream practice in order to assist people in healing holistically) has wildly succeeded in her attempt to prove scientifically that in so many ways we can heal ourselves. The book is unique because its approach is not woo-woo or only anecdotally-based, but grounded in science and in studies from mainline medical journals. This is not an academic or scholarly book, however; it is accessible for any reader and will especially appeal to those who want concrete ways based on sound medical research to embark upon their own healing, even if they are staying within conventional (allopathic) medicine.

The book is endorsed by Christiane Northrup, MD; life coach Martha Beck; Bernie Siegel, MD; shame researcher Brene Brown, PhD; Larry Dossey, MD; and others such as Anita Moorjani, Danielle Laporte, SARK, and Chris Guillebeau. If you like and respect these authors, you will most certainly enjoy this book immensely.

The author has developed a new wellness model that she has details in the last part of the book. Her talents as a physician and a type of life coach have merged in this model. It looks to be very useful. Just from working through it in the book, the reader can develop her/his own personal health plan.

The author does not disparage conventional doctors or allopathic medicine even when she points out their flaws, but advocates that all practitioners work together as part of the patients' health care team.

Some topics covered include: meditation, current research on optimism and happiness, workaholism, community, spontaneous remission, the placebo effect, the nocebo effect, limiting beliefs, and so much more. These are not the same things you've read everywhere else, either--if you care about this area of study and are a healer, you will want to own this book.

The book can be useful to those who are struggling with illness (as the author herself did), those who are well, practicing medical professionals (ah, if only more would read this!), and those who work with mind-body interactions (which should be all healers of any type). I especially recommend it to readers like myself who are life coaches working with advanced mind-body tools who want an accessible explanation for why their modality works--who want an explanation of how--exactly--the mind creates emotions--the book is worth it for that information alone.

The only way I can think of that this book could be improved upon is if it had an index...though my copy is highlighted and self-indexed with notes, and I have a feeling that yours will be the same!

Highly recommended.

Principles of Planology: Grondslagen der planologie (Studies in International Planning History), by JM de Casseres

Between the World Wars the talent of Dutch town planner J.M. de Casseres (1902-1990) found expression in two visionary books and a clutch of influential articles. In an in-depth article published in February 1929 in the magazine De Gids under the title 'Grondslagen der planologie' (Principles of Planology) he invented a term for the new social-scientific discipline that would eventually enter the Dutch language.

De Casseres made it his life's work to elevate the art and craft of town planning to academic status, classifying the international planning body of knowledge and making it accessible and applicable. The results of this internationally supported body of knowledge are reflected not only in de Casseres's publications but also in a string of urban design proposals for towns across the Netherlands.

This republication of the De Gids article alongside five other influential de Casseres articles in translation and their original Dutch language form brings this key thinker into reach for a wider research audience.

Review

Muir and Osborne (Knit Your Own Dog, Knit Your Own Cat) have once again assembled a collection of irresistible knitted animals. This book does exactly what it says it does, offering patterns for a veritable menagerie of miniature creatures. Patterns detail familiar animals such as the elephant and crocodile, as well as such less familiar animals as the anteater or meerkat. With the clever use of pipe cleaners, these animals can stand, sit, sprawl, or, in the case of the Fruit Bat, hang from the rafters. Fun details include fringe of all types, from lion manes to orangutan fur, and color work that replicates zebra stripes, leopard spots, and even mandrill coloring, among others. Two mother-and-child duos are especially darling: a seal and pup, and a kangaroo with removable joey. Patterns require focus but are, as described in the book's subtitle, easy to follow. Devotees of knitted creatures will find a lot to love in this collection.

Another Excellent Book of Patterns for Small, Realistic, Knitted Display Animals
By Lynne E.
KNIT YOUR OWN ZOO is another fine collection of patterns for small knitted display animals (not really suitable for knitted toys) from the authors of Knit Your Own Dog and Knit Your Own Cat. These patterns are well-written, with clear instructions, but probably require advanced intermediate knitting skills (or beyond), because each animal is constructed from many small, shaped parts.

For example, the wonderful giraffe is assembled from (1) a right back leg, (2) a left back leg, (3) a right front leg, (4) a left front leg, (5) a right side of body, (6) a left side of body, (7) a head, (8) a tummy, (9) ears, (10) tail, and (11) mane. The parts for the legs are held on stitch holders until it's time to add the body; some body stitches are also held on stitch holders until it's time to add the head; and so on. The giraffe's "spots" are knitted in using Fair Isle and Intarsia methods. The mane is crocheted; the eyes are embroidered; the tail uses buttonhole stitch; the "horns" are pipe cleaners. To finish, pipe cleaners are added for support when the animal is stuffed. The patterns are written out with row-by-row instructions. The animals are knit with fine yarn on US 2 and US 3 needles.

It amazes me, how well the authors replicate the animals' essential characteristics, so that each finished animal is immediately recognizable as the zoo animal it is intended to be. I really love the giraffe, the mandrill, the bat, the armadillo, the koala, the leopard, and the crocodile!

Patterns are included for the following animals: giant anteater, armadillo, fruit bat, ring-tailed lemur, brown bear, wolf, gray seal and pup, polar bear, penguin, crocodile, koala, chimpanzee, lion, leopard, tiger, zebra, mandrill, camel, meerkat, elephant, giraffe, panda, orangutan, and kangaroo and joey.

Inadequate finishing instructions
By Deb Stanek
I am an expert knitter and I have to say these patterns are not easy, require full concentration for counting stitches and rows. I knit the panda and he literally is not written to match the picture. He has a white pattern on his chest where it is a solid black band in the photo. His over complication of stitches leaves a few messy looking spots even while knitted correctly. He is knit in all one piece. Also a bit of a surprise, this panda was much larger than I expected. I appreciate the quality of the paper and that the book will lie open. I have knit 6 of the dogs now and had to revise several rows. As I knit more of the zoo animals I expect to find the same problems. But if you are an expert, these patterns are a great starting point for creating your own animals and a great exercise in improving given directions. The print is small and there is lots of white space on each page for you to write your notes. As I knit more animals, I will update my review.

Ok now I have knitted the Koala and again I was disappointed. The tummy piece is not as shown in the picture and it turns out that to look life like that tummy piece really needs more shape. The pattern for the tummy literally has you knit a rectangle. It would work for a squirrel though. The body knitted nicely and I found no errors but you really have to keep close count on the wrap and turns. I suggest writing in at the end of each row how many stitches should be left on the needle because the author neglected to do that for us. Since this body has no apparent errors, I think you could turn it into a number of woodland animals by changing the ears, tails, and claws.

I just read in someone's review that there are many many errors in the patterns and that the author corrects them on her website, so perhaps my best advice is to check their website before beginning your project. I know I will before knitting another. The dog patterns are far less disappointing than the zoo animals have been for me. If you are going to substitute yarns, pick a lightweight with at least a little wool in it for stretch. If you are going to make many animals you can keep your yarn expense down by using Lion brand Wool ease, found here on Amazon at a very nice price in very nice colors. I have not found a substitute yet for the Kidsilk.

I've now knit the elephant, which knitted up nicely and looks like the picture in the book without editing any of the pattern. I did however, sew the tummy in before it was fully knitted and then knit it to fit. I have also knitted the polar bear who was easiest and looks good, albeit a little long and skinny. I am about to start the tiger. He's quite complicated so I'll let you all know how that goes.
