The Lopsided Ape: Evolution of the Generative Mind, by Michael C. Corballis

What is it that allows human beings to think the way we do? What enables us to communicate with one another through the use of speech? Is the difference between Homo sapiens and other apes simply a matter of degree or are we unique and discontinuous from other species? Michael C. Corballis argues that this century-old debate lies in the fact that humans are the only primates that are predominantly right-handed, a sign of the specialization of the left hemisphere of the brain for language. He attributes humans' unique abilities to a biological mechanism in the left hemisphere of the brain called a "generative learning device" or GAD. The GAD, Corballis contends, enables us to generate a limitless number of forms and meanings from a few parsed elements, providing the basis for language and manufacture as well as mathematics, reasoning, art, music, and play. Surveying the current views of evolution using evidence from archeology, linguistics, neurology, and genetics, Corballis takes us on a fascinating tour of the origins and implications of the structure of the human brain accounting for the dominance of humanity over all species.

From Library Journal
Are humans unique and discontinuous from other animals? How did our generative and creative capacities develop? These and other questions are presented in an exhaustive, step-by-step fashion in the course of which central issues in the areas of linguistics and evolutionary theory are made accessible to the lay reader. The author (psychology, Univ. of Auckland, New Zealand) follows both a logical, theory-building but also historical sequence within each chapter, going beyond Chomskyan linguistics (which argues that children possess specific linguistic abilities that enable them to learn language) to contend that language reflects a more basic human capacity to represent experience and to generate infinite representations--of which language is but one example. This complete, lucid presentation in the burgeoning field of cognitive psychology will be challenging but interesting to lay readers, and valuable to a broad group of scholars.

Review
"Corballis...tackles this immensely difficult and multifaceted subject in a lively and engaging way and presents his views crisply, thoughtfully, and always with a modesty and a touch of good humor. The Lopsided Ape is full of intellectual riches, and it deserves and, I hope, will find a wide readership." --Science

"This complete, lucid presentation in the burgeoning field of cognitive psychology will be challenging but interesting to lay readers, and valuable to a broad group of scholars." --Library Journal

"A thoroughly intoxicating study...handsomely organized and clearly written." --Booklist

"Wide-ranging and erudite. . .An excellent read, enlivened by many anecdotes, historical details and jokes." --Nature

"A remarkable blend of erudition, clarity and humor. . .This book is compulsive reading." --The Times Higher Education Supplement

"The Lopsided Ape offers much to think about and Corballis provides a thorough review of the relevant literature." --Choice

"Opposing theories are presented with clarity and economy. The selection of research reports and helpful diagrams augment the usefulness of the work. . .provides an excellent overview of many current key issues in human and language origin theory, presents them in highly readable, jargon-free prose and in a well-organized, logical format. The book should be of value not only to human and language evolution theorists but to specialists and nonspecialists concerned with understanding human 'nature' and behavior." --Language Origins Society (LOS) Forum

"Fun reading. From the wealth of his substantial scholarship, Corballis embeds the presentation of GAD within a framework of questions that are of enduring interest to most of us. The initial salvo is a fascinating history of human uniqueness. This volume constitutes a valuable, if not the ultimate, contribution to this literature." --Contemporary Psychology

"Overall, the book is enjoyable and accessible reading for the nonspecialist and specialist alike, laced with interesting commentary on the history and cultural contexts of many of the topics covered." --International Journal of Primatology

"An excellent overview."--Alfred W. Kaszniak, University of Arizona

Why people have right/left hemisphere preferences.
By markbcki@dragonet.es
This is a wonderful book and a really stimulating read. It's beautifully written and researched ( hundreds of references) and tells the story of the evolution of language from the time of its appearance among the earliest humans.
It shows how the overwhelming importance of speech has moulded the brain and it draws on evidence from the fossil record, DNA analysis, phases of reaching maturity, anatomy, experimental evidence and the greater or lesser role that genes play with respect to culture and learning.
The book has changed my way of looking at these things.

Right-handedness and language
By John Duncan
Most people are right-handed, though with a substantial minority of left-handers: this is such a familiar feature of human existence that we rarely think about it at all (especially if we are right-handed), and now that schools no longer try to force left-handers to write with the right hand, the psychological and emotional problems that this once produced have become a distant memory. Michael Corballis, however, thinks about handedness a great deal, and has devoted a large part of his career as a professor of psychology to studying it.

Because we don't think about it much at all, we don't usually notice that bias towards right-handness is a specifically human characteristic. Although animals may prefer to do some actions with one foot rather than the other, they show no consistent bias. To find a comparable case we need to go as far afield as to parrots, which generally prefer to pick up bits of food with their left feet, while standing on their right.

I usually regard discussion left-brain and right-brain specialization as the sort of science that belongs in popular magazines, to be read, perhaps, while waiting for a dental appointment, but otherwise to be treated with the same disdain as signs of the zodiac. Unlike signs of the zodiac, however, lateral specialization of the brain has a perfectly serious aspect, and Corballis makes a strong case that strong handedness in humans is related to an apparently quite different special characteristic of humans, their capacity for language.

Human Cerebral Asymmetry
By Cam Davis
Corballis is an esteemed researcher AND an engaging writer which makes his research palatable to both the scientific community and to the lay public at large. If you're interested in developmental psychobiology and cognitive neuroscince - or if you ~think~ you might be - you can't go wrong with this publication.

How did we make reliable predictions before Pascal and Fermat's discovery of the mathematics of probability in 1654? What methods in law, science, commerce, philosophy, and logic helped us to get at the truth in cases where certainty was not attainable? In The Science of Conjecture, James Franklin examines how judges, witch inquisitors, and juries evaluated evidence; how scientists weighed reasons for and against scientific theories; and how merchants counted shipwrecks to determine insurance rates.

The Science of Conjecture provides a history of rational methods of dealing with uncertainty and explores the coming to consciousness of the human understanding of risk.

Review

A remarkable book. Mr. Franklin writes clearly and exhibits a wry wit. But he also ranges knowledgeably across many disciplines and over many centuries.

(Wall Street Journal)

The Science of Conjecture opens an old chest of human attempts to draw order from havoc and wipes clean the rust from some cast-off classical tools that can now be reused to help build a framework for the unpredictable future.

(Science)

Franklin's style is clear and fluent, with an occasional sly Gibbonian aside to make the reader chuckle.

(New Criterion)

An admirably accessible study written in a crisp prose. It presents the reader with anarching historical perspective throughout many a century of human action.

(Giora Hon Centaurus)

Franklin gives a magisterial account of matters as diverse as the Talmud, Justinian's Digest, torture, witch hunts, Tudor treason trials, ancient and medieval astronomy and physics, humanist historiography, scholastic philosophy, speculations in public debt, and 17th century mathematics. His treatment of medieval law is among the best I have ever read.

(International Journal of Evidence and Proof)

Franklin's book is magnificent... Think of [it] as a non-fiction equivalent of Tolstoy's War and Peace.

(Peter Tillers The Jurist)

The Science of Conjecture is a masterly work, beautifully written, and based on encyclopaedic research... It is simply a tour de force that is unlikely to be surpassed for many a year.

(Barry Miller The Thomist)

Statistics teachers who like to sprinkle a little history and philosophy into their classes will find much here to delight and challenge them... This is a serious and scholarly work that I expect often will inform my teaching.

(Richard J. Cleary Journal of the American Statistical Association)

[This book has given me] sheer enjoyment in its density of strange information, in the wit and clarity if its writing, and in the vigour of its argumentation. I recommend it unreservedly to all interested in its subject.

(Oliver Mayo Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics)

This is the intellectual book of the year, and it ought to become one of the great classics of intellectual history.

(Scott Campbell Interdisciplinary Science Reviews)

The strength of The Science of Conjecture lies in its panoramic exposition of developments across the centuries and across intellectual disciplines and human endeavors. It is, as one reviewer wrote, 'a magesterial account of matters as diverse as the Talmud, Justinian's Digest, torture, witch hunts, Tudor treason trials, ancient and medieval astronomy and physics, humanist histriography, scholastic philosophy, speculations in public debt, and 17th century mathematics.'

(D. H. Kaye Law and History Review)

A remarkable book. Mr. Franklin writes clearly and exhibits a wry wit. But he also ranges knowledgeably across many disciplines and over many centuries. There are several reasons to read this book, but perhaps the best reason is its contemporary relevance. The lessons he discusses have pertinence to an age like ours, which has witnessed a gradual waning of faith in the objectivity of the relation of uncertain evidence to conclusion.

(Wall Street Journal)

The Science of Conjecture is an extraordinary work, a clearly written history of the ideas of evidence and of uncertainty before Pascal. Franklin has mastered a vast literature over thousands of years, bringing it together in scholarly fashion, fully annotated.

(Stephen Stigler, University of Chicago, author of The History of Statistics: The Measurement of Uncertainty before 1900)

In The Science of Conjecture, James Franklin shows us how deeply and subtly jurists and philosophers from ancient Greece onwards have explored how we can deal rationally with real-life cases (law cases, for instance, or scientific experiments) where the link between cause and effect is not obvious.

(J.M. Coetzee The Australian)

Since many in the nominalist/empiricist/positivist tradition deny that we can know natures, this book has a place in teacher education as well as legal education for the challenges it poses the reader on how we know, and how well we know, through induction, perception and abstraction.

(Metascience)

The text has an even wider importance in that it signals the need for more, not less, study of the history, philosophy and social studies in science to occupy a greater space in undergraduate degrees so that an educated electorate is better able to evaluate what the STEM community tells us is good for the progress of society.

(Metascience)

Stands above, way above other books on the history and philosophy of probability.
By N N Taleb
As a practitioner of probability, I've had to read many books on the subject. Most are linear combinations of other books and ideas rehashed without real understanding that the idea of probability harks back to the Greek pisteuo (credibility) [and pithanon that led to probabile in latin] and pervaded classical thought. Almost all of these writers made the mistake to think that the ancients were not into probability. And most books such as "Against the Gods" are not even wrong about the notion of probability: odds on coin flips are a mere footnote. Same with current experiments with psychology of probability. If the ancients were not into computable probabilities, it was not because of theology, but because they were not into highly standardized games. They dealt with complex decisions, not merely simplified and purified probability. And they were very sophisticated at it.

The author is both a mathematician and a philosopher, not a philosopher who took a calculus class hence has a shallow idea of combinatorics and feels dominated by the subject, something that plagues the subject of the philosophy of probability.

This book stands above, way above the rest: I've never seen a deeper exposition of the subject, as this text covers, in addition to the mathematical bases, the true philosophical origin of the notion of probability. Finally, Franklin covers matters related to ethics and contract law, such as the works of the medieval thinker Pierre de Jean Olivi, that very few people discuss today.

Got me blazing right along.
By LWAddict
Switching over from Lightwave 3d to Autodesk Maya was proving to be a daunting task at best...
but I'm over halfway through this introductory book and I'm already setting up projects, scenes, animating, modeling, and texturing without any issues.
I know one review here is recommending the video over the book but after having gone halfway through this book and also having the video mentioned...uh, need I use the cliche, "the book was better"?
This program is so in depth and can do so much, don't do yourself the injustice of thinking you're going to get everything out of a single video (or book for that matter).
And, for what it's worth, this is one of those times that the Kindle version of a book doesn't appear to have any issues, so far so good.

Update: Having completed this book, I can say... Definitely one of the best ways to get started with Maya 2015. I'm already modeling, rigging, texturing, and animating and now know what specific areas I need to focus on to move forward. Highly recommend this book. NOTE that I used the Kindle version.

More than just an introduction to Autodesk Maya 2015, this is a complete primer on Computer Generated graphics
By Jerry Saperstein
I don’t use Autodesk Maya 2015 and I doubt that I will ever use Maya.

But I do dabble in animation with other programs and this book is, as I suspected it would be, an excellent primer on animation and CGI techniques.

As the author makes clear, if you don’t understand creating 3D objects, lighting them, texturing them, animating them and a lot more, Maya is just another doorstop.

The principles of animation and CGI remain the same, no matter what application you use. Obviously you won’t have every feature of Maya available if you use something like Blender, but the principles will remain the same and as with any other discipline, you have to crawl before you can walk.

And author Dariush Derakhshani begins with a crawl: an overview of the CG (Computer Graphics) process. He is an excellent writer, spelling out each core concept in substantial detail. The book is profusely illustrated, though regrettably, the illustrations are not in color. He provides projects for you to work on and, I fyou’re not working with Maya, you’ll have to figure out if the equivalent functions are available in what you’re using, which I suspect will be Blender for most of us who can’t or won’t lay down the price of Maya.

The projects, as you would expect (and hope for), get more difficult as the book progresses and I personally am very tempted to download the Maya trial and work furiously to bring my meager skills ot the point where I can try the animated catapult project. By the way, all the project files are downloadable.

Overall, I picked up a lot of interesting techniques for my amateurish efforts in Blender. I suspect Maya users will benefit far more.

Well Written, Accessible to All ...
By Dr. E
Foremost, I truly appreciate this writer's casual tone. I entered this text slightly intimated by the subject matter. I have done a great deal of video editing in the past, but not as much visual effects as I would like. Therefore, when I read this simple line, I knew I was in good hands: "You know when something doesn't look right, and so will the people watching your animation" (4). Direct, frank, and entirely understandable. I wish that more talented people wrote in such a concise manner.

By all means, this is a primer. It is for absolutely anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of visual effects (in general) or desires to transfer one's knowledge to Maya (from a different program). It is a (necessarily) slow (but fruitful) walk through all pertinent aspects of Maya. Additionally, jargon is defined progressively throughout the text (this allows readers to gradually build their vocabulary ... very smart).

Though the figures and examples are grey-scale, they are still helpful. (This is not the case with comparable texts ... where grey-scale can mean "muddied examples").

Ideally, use this text in tandem with Maya. While it can be an interesting theoretical read, the exercises provided are genuinely effective and confidence building. And, what I found outstanding about this text is the manner in which it encourages the reader much like a professor would. For example, when discussing how to animate a locomotive, the author deliberately demonstrates potential problems with sayings like "Let's try it." And, when providing the reader with the correct answer, the author playfully notes, "You have to love Undo!" (381). These touches make the text accessible ... and, by all means, a success.

This is a phenomenal text for those with a curiosity about Maya as well as a class supplement. Highly recommended!
