I have been looking for a way to change up my staff's PD this year. I ran across this book on Twitter recently. I finished the book in a weekend. I appreciate the chapters on Flipped PD by Brad Gustafson, Kristin Daniels and Laura Conley. They left me excited and ready to tackle it with lots of great ideas. We have our first PD Day coming up and I definitely plan on using some of the new ideas from the book that day.

Thanks to all the authors who contributed to this book for the great, practical ideas with resources so you can implement any idea quickly. I highly recommend this book for all admins, instructional and tech coaches and anyone wanting to deliver meaningful PD using 21st century tools.

The time for Personalized PD is now!

As a long-time champion of differentiated professional development, this book has never been more relevant. I have been an elementary teacher for seventeen years, and recently transitioned into the role of instructional coach. Over my years as a teacher, I have suffered through many professional development meetings, sessions, and updates that were poorly delivered or irrelevant to my actual daily work with children. Conversely, I have also been passionate about a topic or have targeted a particular area for personal professional growth, only to feel frustrated that there is not money to send me to the desired training or pay for my substitute.

Jason Bretzmann and many other authors boldly deliver the case for teachers to be afforded the same respect we are expected to give our students: a flipped professional development experience that takes into account the idea that educators are all on different journeys with varied experiences. Just as we differentiate for a broad range of learners in our classrooms, Personalized PD explores how administrators and school leaders can deliver differentiated professional development that honors teachers' experiences, builds on teachers' passions, and ultimately utilize technology to empower teachers with choice and voice in their own professional learning.

A close look at how teachers can & should learn

Jason Bretzmann and many other authors share what it really means to personalize professional development. It is clear this set of authors deeply understands that every teacher has a different background and skill set, and they have practical and original strategies to meet those needs. They encourage educational leaders to be relevant, timely, and smart when considering how to best deliver content to their adult learners. It is clear that the authors know how to take advantage of time and tools. The path that the authors lead us down is one of growth - individual growth. They inspire educators everywhere to take a close look at what works and what does not.

Personalized PD truly defines what it means to empower teachers while offering many modes of learning. I appreciate the professional development remix, the unique insights of each author, the modeling of appropriate and useful tools, and reflective nature of the book.

But her second cookbook is a disappointment to me

I am a fan of Angela Liddon's first cookbook and her blog. But her second cookbook is a disappointment to me. There are several recipes on her blog already...endurance crackers, green taco wraps with lentil walnut meat, oh em gee veggie burgers. Im surprised that she included almond butter, more chia seed pudding (with different fruit only...I dont need a recipe for that), overnight oats, guacamole and avacado toast (again...no recipe needed). But the killer for me was the Reset Button Green Smoothie written as two separate recipes....one family size and one half batch. I can do the math myself and I dont need my cookbook to do this for me! I would have to think twice before buying another cookbook of hers.

Disappointing for OSG fans

Let me preface by saying I am a huge fan of Angela’s, I have followed her blog for years and her recipes are always in my rotation. That being said, I could not wait until her new cookbook came out. After doing an initial flip through, I was stunned to realize I had no desire to cook anything in there! As other customers have mentioned, many of the recipes are already on her blog or can be found in her old cookbook. Even the ones that were new seemed uninventive and recycled. While there were an abundance of desserts recipes, I was extremely disappointed at the lack of entrees and savory dishes. If you already own her first cookbook and are familiar with her blog, there is no need to buy this new cookbook, this was a very disappointing follow up.

A few gems, but still more than a little disappointed

As a huge Oh She Glows fan, it totally kills me to write this review.

Like many of the other reviewers, I was very disappointed by OSG Everyday. Here are my central complaints:

1. The recipes are far from "accessible" - many require specialty ingredients that are difficult to find. I live in Chicago and have visited THREE Whole Foods and still can't find black sesame seeds for her sun dried tomato crackers or sorghum for her tabbouleh recipe. Her caramel sauce requires coconut nectar, which is expensive, a smoothie recipe calls for coconut butter (also expensive) and many recipes call for cashew butter (again, expensive). I also can't find spelt breadcrumbs anywhere.

2. The recipes can take a while. For a cookbook that is being marketed as filled with recipes for people with "on the go lifestyles", numerous recipes begin with "so this one is a little involved" and are not suitable for quick weeknight meals. I made her Oh Em Gee veggie burgers and even after making the 9 spice mixture and her barbecue sauce in advance, the recipe still took over an hour to make. I want to make her vegan Shepard's Pie next and that one is also far from an easy or quick meal.

3. Many of the recipes are recycled from her blog: sweet potato casserole, the crispy smashed potatoes, the 9 spice mix (essentially the 10 spice mix with turmeric and without the garlic powder), lentil walnut taco meat, sunflower seed butter and crumble bars to name a few. She also includes a recipe for almond butter and another recipe for hummus, which was in her first cookbook.

I feel like she took on too much at one time and this cookbook definitely shows it. I made her sweet potato spinach "curry" and was totally disappointed. The dish was labeled a curry but contained no curry powder or paste and was pretty flavorless.

There are some good recipes mixed in there: the mango matcha smoothie is delicious, her pumpkin snack cookies and cookie dough bites are also exceptional. Overall, I just am not sure if this book is worth buying.

About the Author

Gail Pan lives on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia, at the foot of the beautiful Dandenong Ranges (a series of low, verdant mountain ranges). Growing up in a home where sewing was always an important part of life, it was only natural that she tried every craft there was! She has always had some kind of project in the works, trying everything from knitting to cross-stitch.

In 2003, at the encouragement of friends who were opening a patchwork business, Gail began to design and release her own patterns. She's been designing ever since! Gail teaches all over the world and gets great satisfaction and enjoyment from sharing her love of needle and thread.

About the Author

Steven B. Heymsfield, MD, brings a broad range of experience in research to the writing of this book. He is trained in physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine, all of which relate to the measurement and study of body composition. Dr. Heymsfield is currently the executive director of clinical studies, metabolism at Merck in Rahway, New Jersey, where he oversees Merck's Clinical Obesity Research Program.

Additionally, he is a visiting scientist at the Obesity Research Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. Prior to his current position, Dr. Heymsfield was a professor of medicine at the Columbia University, New York, College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Heymsfield has conducted national and international presentations and made many contributions to publications in the field. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Journal of Body Composition Research, Age & Nutrition, Nutrition Reviews, Clinical Nutrition, and Adipocytes. He is also an active member of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity and past president of both the American Society of Clinical Nutrition and the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

Timothy G. Lohman, PhD, is a leading scientist in the field of body composition assessment. A respected researcher, he explores body composition methodology and changes in body composition with growth and development, exercise, and aging. His leadership in standardization of body composition methodology is well recognized.

Dr. Lohman is a professor in the department of exercise science at the University of Arizona. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Education, a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, and a member of the Youth Fitness Advisory Committee of the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, Texas. He is the author of many research articles and an editor of the Anthropometric Standardization Reference Manual, published by Human Kinetics. Dr. Lohman is also author of Advances in Body Composition Assessment.

ZiMian Wang, PhD, is an associate research scientist at Columbia University College and research associate in the Obesity Research Center of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Trained in biology, biochemistry, physiology, and chemistry, he has published more than 100 research papers on the topic of human body composition.

Scott B. Going, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Arizona. An expert in body composition models and methods, he has more than 20 years of related teaching experience and research experience in this field.

Book came in looking brand new. It impressed me how well the book looked. I expected I was just buying a cheap used book to get me through my class, I was blown away with a brand new looming book. Great buy in my opinion. It did take awhile to get to my house though.

As any classically trained musician knows, Bach's The Well Tempered Clavier is one of the most difficult pieces of music ever composed for the piano. Only the world's best concert pianists ever attempt to play the full thing in concert. This is just Vol. 1. The two volumes combined takes about 2 hours to play (and about 2 decades to learn to play.) Anyway, Bach is the preeminent composer of the baroque period and thus the Well Tempered Clavier is one of the most used teaching pieces in all of piano repertoire. Even the simpler selections are rather advanced so I was quite pleased this year, after 7 years of lessons, that my teacher felt I was ready to start tackling this. Of course, a review of the music is meaningless. It would be like reviewing the Declaration of Independence. What I can say is that, given the fact that this book will keep me busy for a number of years, it has very sturdy construction and is layed out in a very functional manner. There is also a great deal of supplementary information about Bach in the book that will be most useful in interpreting the performances of each piece. I am very pleased with it and look forward to a lot of usage.

Bach with Exquisite Editing

I need some editing to Baroque music because the trills etc are so different from the Romantic era. Dr Palmer does an outstanding job of explaining this Bach masterpiece. The interpretative suggestions and large print will save you so much time in getting introduced to these singular and commutative masterpieces. I also wish the now deceased Dr Palmer edited Bach Goldberg Variations in this detailed/insightful manner. His explanations are marked for those with others language skills and thus understood with minimal effort throughout. The fingering makes so much sense it nows has revived a love for Bach's solo piano works. I hope to review in ernest 12 Preludes and Fugues over the next several months.

Preface

This book aims to present a synthesis of a wide range of ethnographic and historical data concerning the roles of women and men in different kinds of societies. It focuses on both material conditions and ideological valuations that affect and reflect cultural models of gender.

The third edition of Women and Men: Cultural Constructs of Gender contains a new chapter, a revision of chapters on gender and language, as well as expanded discussions of a number of topics interspersed throughout the book. The new chapter (7), "Global Economic Development," discusses the effects of economic development programs on women's and men's economic, social, and political roles. Chapter 10, "Gender and Language," is a revision of material covered in two chapters in the previous edition. It combines data on language and language from English and from several non-Indo-European languages spoken in other parts of the world.

Part 1: The Impact of Material Conditions on Gender Roles

Chapter 1 considers the notion of gender as a social construct. It discusses interrelationships of gender and other aspects of culture (economy, social and political organization, and religion), which form the basis for the presentation of data and theory in subsequent chapters.

Chapter 2 considers gender roles and relations in several societies whose economic base is centered on foraging. Comparison is made between the Ju/'hoansi ( ju-TWAN-si) in Namibia and Botswana and the Inuit and Inupiat of Arctic Canada and Alaska.

Gender roles in pastoral and farming societies are discussed in Chapter 3. The groups considered include nomadic pastoral societies of the American Plains, mixed pastoral and farming societies (the Navajo, Nuer, and Luo), and horticultural societies such as the Iroquois of North America, the Yanomamo and Jivaro of the Amazon, and the Igbo of Nigeria.

In Chapter 4 is a discussion of gender roles in stratified societies, concentrating on peoples of the Canadian Pacific coast (the Haida and Tlingit), the Kpelle of Liberia, the Mpondo of the Transkei, and the Tonga of Polynesia. Interrelationship between increased stratification and gender inequality is demonstrated to varying degrees in these societies.

The existence of marked gender inequality in agricultural states is discussed in Chapter 5, exemplified by the Incan society of Peru and the modern states of India and China. Chapter 6 analyzes the historical development of industrialization in the United States in terms of its use of and impact on gender inequalities in preexisting societies. Utilization of women's labor in early industrialization and the subsequent marginalization of women in advanced industrial nations are discussed. Finally, Chapter 7 reviews processes of global economic development and demonstrates their effect on women's and men's roles and relationships.

Part 2: Ideological Constraints on Gender Constructs

Chapter 8 examines several worldwide issues concerning the interrelationships among gender, health, and survival. It also contains a new, detailed discussion of a third gender, a social category existing in many native cultures of North America that was distinct from the genders of woman and man. In addition, women's so-called reproductive illnesses—namely, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopausal disorders—are discussed as examples of societal attitudes that label women's normal biological functions as illnesses requiring control and correction.

The function of religious beliefs and practices in justifying and reinforcing gender roles and relations is the focus of Chapter 9. It now includes three new sections on topics dealing with gender and religion. Female genital mutilation is described and analyzed within the context of negative attitudes toward women's sexuality and the social/religious justifications given to control and punish women's natural desires. A discussion of religion and homosexuality examines religious proscriptions against and prescriptions for sexual relations between members of the same sex. And, finally, the chapter includes a review of some tendencies within the women's spirituality movement.

Chapter 10 considers evidence of the role of language in maintaining and reproducing societal gender relations. It begins with an examination of English and English speakers and then proceeds with discussion of language in a variety of cultures. Data are derived from Japanese, Javanese, Malagasy (Madagascar), Kuna (Panama), and Mohawk (Native North America), with French, German, and Spanish briefly noted.

Finally, Chapter 11 summarizes the main arguments presented in our analyses of gender roles and relations. It also examines the impact of historical forces of change on gender models. The chapter concludes with a discussion of ideological barriers to changing beliefs and attitudes of gender but, in the end, stresses the possibility of individual and societal transformation.

Useful Supplemental Text for Music Education Majors

The content of this text makes it a fine supplement to any "nuts and bolts" textbook for pre-service music teachers. While the authors do not address important topics such as rehearsal planning, teaching skills, and behavior management; they do address several other topics not usually treated in detail in secondary texts -- topics such as music education history, philosophy and aesthetics, psychological and sociological foundations, curriculum development, research competencies, assessment, and current issues in teacher education. I use this as a library reserve item, asking students to present in-class reports on its various topics. An extremely useful supplement that leads to professionally oriented in-class discussions.

A good starting point for research

I've worked with this book since I was a freshman in college, and I'm now about to finish my master's in music ed while teaching full-time at a public school. My copy of this book is extremely well highlighted, with lots of notes in the margins. This is the book that I usually go to first if I want to start research on some topic within music education. My only problem with this book is that it is somewhat dated, and hope the authors will do a revision in the near future. In the meantime, this book is still a great resourse.

We had to read this book for our Foundations course in music education. I found it boring, out of date, poorly written --- altogether, it's a very, very poor introduction to the field of music education by three very pedantic, "out of touch" authors.

Taking the class with Soldworks 2015-2016. All the information is current enough. The book spells everything out pretty well if you are doing it on your own, with the only exception is the order in which tools and topics are brought up is kind of out of order. If you get stuck look multiple chapters ahead to find the answer.

About the Author
Patrick Alderton qualified as an Extra Master after serving on most of
the major types of ships and then became a lecturer on the commercial
transport courses at the London Guildhall University in the 1970s.
There he was appointed a CNAA Research Degree Examiner. He moved to the
World Maritime University in Sweden as the Professor of Ports and
Shipping in the late 1980s. He has written over 100 articles and
papers on Maritime Transport.

Handful Book

The book covers a wide range of subjects and it is not limited to sea transportation. A potential reader should examine the book beforehand by taking a look inside where he or she will have an idea as to the above subjects. I just regret that the author mainly cites examples and data regarding the UK reality, including a number of legal provisions and quite specific issues. At any rate, most of the concepts presented throughout the book apply to every professional into the sea transportation and port operations areas.

The first chapters look into very basic concepts, whereas the final ones are more specific. Chapter 13 (named "Safety") covers an up-to-date subject that has been of great concern all around the world. Chapter 15 (namely,"Ports") was of great interest to me, particularly because very few books cover such subject. It is the type of book for a reader to purchase and keep shelved for future reference.
