Read this book to learn what philosophy is

Alex Broadbent's answer to the question "what is philosophy?" is by itself worth the cost of the book. After rejecting the view that philosophy concerns reflection on unanswerable questions considered worthy of investigation despite being unanswerable [What makes them worthy of sustained reflection? Who decides? Is this enough to support a foundational discipline?], he writes, "My more considered definition is that philosophy is the study of the relation between thought and the world." This was enough to snap me out of my deflationary analytic hypnogogia. Having read Broadbent, I am free of the nagging feeling that I ought to suppress my interest in philosophy or apologize for it.

Prof Broadbent provides source readings at the end of each chapter. These should be pursued, but Prof. Broadbent's account is often clearer and more concise than the sources he relies on. The book is of interest to a far greater audience than the small cohort of graduate students who will successfully enter and negotiate the often pointlessly competitive, backbiting, judgmental, rank- and pedigree-conscious world of academic philosophy--it is for this reason I am reviewing it.

About the Author
Mark Allan Powell is a Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and an internationally recognized theologian and Bible scholar. The author of more than 25 books and 100 articles, Dr Powell has served as a Visiting Professor at universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Chicago, as well as at schools in Estonia, Tanzania, and Russia. He is best known for his work in literary criticism, Matthean studies, and historical Jesus studies.

A great textbook

I have used Powell's book as a text for my undergraduate "Life and Teachings of Jesus" course during this past year. It is extremely well written and organized. Powell has a gift for presenting complex information in accessible form. The charts and tables in the book are particularly helpful and to the point. My students consistently compliment the book for its content and clarity. The only disappointment is that the chapters on each of the four canonical gospels are not structured in a way that mirrors their narrative shape. The struggle to lead students through the worlds created by the gospels and to present relevant critical issues at the same time is most difficult. Powell balances these concerns as well as anyone and much better than most. If only there was space in such a textbook to lead students to a discovery of the themes of the gospels instead of listing and describing them. That is a task still left to the instructor, but Powell's book provides excellent support.

Great Introduction

This is a very good book for summarizing dozens of scholarly fields into a coherent 'Introduction' of the canonized gospels. Great starting poing if you don't know much about Q or the M and L material. Sufficient discussion about the characteristics and histories of the four gospels. My only knock against this book is that the author too often makes the statement 'most scholars' in order to back a particular hypothesis - refuting a quote from the book that evidence should be 'weighed, not counted.' Still, I learned a lot from the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the New Testament texts.

A great introduction to the gospels

Most biblical studies are quite frankly designed for scholars and seminary students. As a general reader, I can unhesitatingly recommend this small volume that helps you understand the basics of the Gospels.
There are three sections for each of the four Gospels, discussing Characteristics (what makes it different from the other three Gospels), Historical background (where, when and why they were probably written and whether Matthew, Mark, Luke and John actually wrote them) and Major Themes (the messages that each writer wanted to get across). Things that the general reader might not be aware of, like the phantom "Q" Gospel that probably provided Matthew and Luke with material and the controversy over whether John or Lazarus was the "Beloved Disciple", are introduced in easy to understand fashion without overwhelming non-scholars. There is also an appendix summarizing the "Gnostic Gospels" which, although I wouldn't count on finding them in new copies of the New Testament anytime soon, are gaining credibility with scholars (especially the Gospel of Thomas).
I found it interesting and informative.

Lewis Lockwood taught at Princeton and Harvard universities, where he is Fanny Peabody Professor of Music Emeritus. His Beethoven: The Music and the Life was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. He resides in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Excellent Review of Beethoven's Symphonies

In my opinion, Beethoven is the greatest music composer of all time, and his symphonies are all excellent. So, when I saw that this book was available from the author of a recent excellent biography on the life of Beethoven, I jumped at the opportunity to read and savored every minute.

Each chapter of the book covers one of Beethoven's symphonies. The coverage includes the historical context around the symphony, when it appears that started to jot down themes for this symphony and when he finished the symphony (for example, Beethoven jotted down the well known popular theme for the Fifth in 1803 but finished it in 1808). Then, the author reviews the contents of each symphony in some detail. Although this can be technical, I found that it was useful and helped me to better appreciate each piece of music. Some specifics on this: the Second Symphony's 2nd movement is one of his best slow movements. This brought me back to a better appreciation of that symphony. The Seventh Symphony is mostly rhythmic, and the 2nd movement is one his popular (how true!). When asked at the end of his life, Beethoven mentioned that he liked his Third Symphony the best and this symphony is built around the 2nd or funeral march movement. (Personally, I like the Fifth Symphony better, but when pressed he still said that he liked the Third better).

There are lots of interesting pieces of information on Beethoven and his symphonies in this book. I plan on reading each chapter again while I listen to each symphony on future plane trips. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves Beethoven's music, however, you may want to read this author's biography on Beethoven first.

Interesting but stick with his "Beethoven: the Music and the Life"

Somewhat disappointing, this book seems oddly old-fashioned and disjointed. As the reviewer in the NYRB stated, Lockwood sometimes schematically analyses the music and sometimes uses historical and biographical information to elucidate the "meaning" behind each work. He often fails to make a really intense connection between how the music is written and why it was written, and how it might have been influenced by extra-musical issues of a cultural, political and artistic nature, when describing each work. Yet his introduction-the best part of the book-does this amazingly well. Only in his analysis of the Eroica, which is less interesting and less fully developed than in his previous book, does he attempt to make this clear, and he completely misreads the meaning of the Finale, which is much less an emotional resolution of the symphony (as it is in the 5th). Instead it represents a historically grounded didactic pageant of how a hero's ideas and actions are viewed by posterity, finally resulting in their ultimate triumph. Lockwood seems to dismiss this idea in favor of the greater emotional, but much less interesting outpouring (and repetitiveness) of the finale to the fifth. Beethoven, who knew the Eroica was his masterpiece (not the fifth) before he wrote the ninth, would definitely NOT have approved. Of course, when it comes to Beethoven's symphonies, or any great music, unless one listens again and again, what point is there to read about it unless it furthers ones' understanding and appreciation. What could have been MUCH more interesting would have been to eliminate "the Life" and to focus more on the history of music and the culture of the times: the Enlightenment, the German Sturm and Drang movement, Goethe, Schiller, the French Revolution and its' ideals, and most importantly, the influence of ancient Greece and Rome on the artistic milieu of the period. (See Martha Walling Howard's "The Influence of Plutarch on the Literature of the Eighteenth Century" for example and Robert Rosenblums' "Tranformations in Eighteenth Century Art"). Lockwood does this only in the introduction then seems to (mostly) drop the idea for an analysis of the structural details of each work. Like most of our still pervasive "Age of Analysis" formalism trumps real insights in artistic criticism. A shame.

Best book I've read on Beethoven

Unlike many others who will read this book, I am not a trained musician. But music, of all genres, has continually grown in importance for me. One of my life goals is to understand as much as possible of great works of music. This book has made an important contribution. The author writes of each of the nine symphonies in a clear and informative style. Avoiding obscure pedantry on one side and vague opinions and cliches on the other.

The League of Atonement versus the Literary Avenger

A hazing accident at a Harvard dormitory leaves a young man hopelessly crippled. The 35 men responsible for the injury form a League of Atonement to help support their victim. Eventually the victim discovers he has great literary ability and becomes a lionized author. All his books have as their theme the murder of various characters modeled after various members of the League of Atonement. The victim has become a Literary Avenger. Then one member dies violently at a reunion while in close proximity to the Literary Avenger. The survivors receive an anonymous poem suggesting the Literary Avenger has become a literal avenger. Another dies of poisoning shortly after a meeting with the Avenger. Another group of poems goes out. A third disappears without a trace. Another anonymous poem goes out to the League. They have transmogrified from the League of Atonement to the League of Frightened Men.
They consult with Nero Wolfe, and he undertakes to relieve their fears for an obscene fee. Wolfe feels that all he needs is the answers to three questions and he can corkscrew a confession out of the Literary Avenger. Before Wolfe can pull it off, his target gets himself arrested for the murder of a fourth member of the League, and it looks like an open and shut case. Wolfe stands to lose his fee. If the Avenger gets electrocuted for the fourth murder, the League won't owe him a cent.
Archie Goodwin, Wolfe's confidential assistant, sees the problem quite simply. All Wolfe has to do is exonerate the Literary Avenger in the fourth murder and get confessions to the first three. The pair of detectives travels a complex path to achieve Archie's simple solution. Archie gets poisoned, Wolfe gets kidnapped, and it all culminates in one of the most Machiavellian maneuvers ever to spring from Wolfe's fertile imagination.

Good book, getting tired of the typos

Referring to the Kindle edition: I am a long-time Nero Wolfe fan, and am slowly collecting the books on Kindle. I am discovering that typos in Kindle books are almost the norm, and this edition of "League of Frightened Men" is no exception. The nature of the typos indicates that someone ran the original book through a scanner and didn't bother to do a lot of editing.

If a book is issued by the publisher (Bantam) in a Kindle edition at essentially the same price as the paperback, I expect some serious attention to formatting and detail. On the other hand, "Fer de Lance" contained a completely screwed up line of text that had been copied exactly from the same printing error in the original Bantam edition.

Would it be asking too much to have someone read these over before selling them?

I really loved this book even before I read "Stout Fellow" by "O.E.McBride." Her insightful analysis of all of Rex Stout's work confirms what I already suspected: Rex Stout's earliest books were his best.

This one can be forgiven some narrative excesses (the pink tie and soup, for example) in fair exchange for some of Wolfe's best Wolfeisms. The one about membership in the Hardvard Club is in this book.

And finally, Paul Chapin is a much better "Moriarty" than Arnold Zeck. He's much deeper and more complex, in fact, than virtually any other of Stout's other characters, doubly subtle by the way in which his villainy is propounded.

Fetishism, kinky stuff - all here more so that in anything else of Wolfe's that comes to mind. And it is expertly read in audio.
