About the Author
Bob Sweet has more than 30 years of experience in the technology and electronics markets and 30 years of boating experience. He has held engineering and senior executive management positions with a number of companies including GTE, Harris, ABA Industries, Inframetrics and Elbit Systems - the last three at the President and CEO level. He has both BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Penn State. He started his career as a radar and communications system engineer and, throughout his career, gained extensive experience with GPS including managing a corporate business unit that developed major portions of GPS for the Air Force. Well written, nicely illustrated, and utterly practical

For most boaters, power or sail, this is your best bet for a single, clear, comprehensive guide to piloting and navigation. The author, Sweet, is very knowledgeable and takes a straightforward approach to navigation in the electronic age. He makes a strong case for developing the skills to navigate without relying on electronic Chartplotters and Global Positioning Systems (which CAN and DO fail, like any other electronic device); however, he does not condescend to the reader on this issue, nor does he exclude those electronic devices from consideration. On the contrary, the nicest aspect of this book is the way it INTEGRATES electronic and traditional means of piloting, showing you how each can complement the other in useful ways. The result is a book that will teach you how to understand and use your electronics better, while developing traditional navigational skills that may save your life (or at least save you some inconvenience) the next time your electronics go down.

I've read a lot of books on navigation in the last 20 years. Sweet does a better-than-average job of explaining traditional piloting techniques in an accessible manner, with very nice illustrations that allow the reader to reflect on and absorb some of the abstract concepts involved. (Piloting is not hard, but it can feel overwhelming and confusing at first until you really "get" it.) Sweet is also one of the only authors I've come across who talks about electronic navigation methods as the normal reality for day-to-day navigation among most boaters (which it is!). Most other books relegate electronic devices to an isolated chapter, seem hopelessly out of date with regard to modern GPS innovations, and/or discuss electronic navigation as if it is an afterthought. Sweet talks as if he understands, realistically, that GPS will be the primary source of navigational information for the boaters he is addressing, and that is why his tone and approach come across so well. Along the way, he makes good recommendations about other resources to consult, such as Nigel Calder's definitive guide to reading a nautical chart, and to the free Coastal Explorer software that provides an excellent way to view NOAA raster charts for free on your computer. I am convinced of his credibility. This is a resource I would not hesitate to trust. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a clear and comprehensive guide to modern navigation.

I would NOT buy the Kindle edition, since the illustrations in this book are very important to developing a full understanding of certain concepts, and would not likely display well on the Kindle (smaller, without color, etc.).

Excellent Piloting Book

I've got a half dozen books on coastal navigation (piloting actually) and all are good, but Bob Sweet's book integrates GPS with traditional piloting methods in a way none of the rest do. Most books are either all about getting the most out of your GPS, or they concentrate on traditional charting methods then update the subject with separate chapters on GPS, RADAR, LORAN, etc.
This book approaches 21 first century piloting as an integrated plan for most conditions that shows the roles played by your charts, your electronics, and your common sea sense in a balanced, minute by minute situational awareness where no single tool predominates.
In short, Sweet's book answers the question I always had after reading other books: "OK, so how to I put all this together on the bay with only two hands, two eyes and one brain? This book shows how to do it without overloading yourself.

A well planned book, manufactured nicely with good paper and color.

Practical and Thorough

A great book for how most people navigate today. I completed the ASA navigation course, but its complete lack of GPS use and focus on complex math made for a steep learning curve, and I was not comfortable relying on it in practical applications without much more time on the water. This book uses a nice combination of paper charts and electronics, that actually works on the water. Being six years old, much of the specific tech has changed, but I was still able to use it with a new Garmin handheld chart-plotter to navigate my first three day charter in the Tampa Bay area. I wish I would have read it before purchasing a GPS as I would have purchased a more simple unit and invested more in other navigation areas.

In the midst of all the arid, bullet point-ridden business books, Whyte's stands out with its languid I'll-get-to-the-point-when-I'm-damned-good-and-ready approach. A poet, corporate trainer, and author of The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America, Whyte challenges readers to remember their childhood interests and enthusiasms. He claims that this is necessary in order to escape the deadening influences of adult "musts" and "shoulds" and to recapture the passion that one needs to do good work. Whyte discusses his own career changes, from naturalist to nonprofit executive to writer/presenter/coacher. Echoing Fortgang, his main point is the popular "Do what you love and the money will follow," but he personalizes it by telling his own story and by including snippets of focused poetry (his own and others'), so that it's not as hackneyed as it may sound. Because an excerpt appeared in the March 2001 issue of O: The Oprah Magazine, there's sure to be demand in public libraries.

Powerful prose

This book was recommended by my sister who is a brilliant artist that knows her brother inside out and backwards. I was in tears in the first chapter, and I have never seen a wordsmith put sentences together as does David Whyte; they are packed tight with elegance and meaning. If you are spending much of your time wishing you were somewhere else, doing something else, pick up a copy of "Crossing the Unknown Sea -- Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity."

“Kill the Indian and save the man” is the motto given by the founder of a school, in 1879, who believed that if he could erase the culture, religion and identity from Indian children, teaching them how to function in a “white man’s world” they could become upstanding citizens of the United States. However, Kanton, a 16 year old Apache Indian, had other ideas. He vowed never to bend to the white man’s world, even though to please his father he agreed to go to the school and at least learn to, read, write, and learn the English language.

When he escapes the walls of the school and gets involved in an adventure to find the lost Apache gold mine in Arizona, he starts to discover that clinging to his convections is not as cut and dried as he believed it would be. He struggles with his own Indian pride, when he ends up falling in love with a white woman, whom he knows he can never marry because of the fact that he is an Indian and the woman he loves would be shunned by her own people, if she became his wife.

Wanting to protect her from the shame of marrying an Indian, while loving her beyond reason, is a struggle that makes him question his own convictions, and what love is really all about.

Very good book

I enjoyed reading this historical romance. It begins with a young Apache boy being put on a train with other children from his tribe. They were taken to Philadelphia to the Carlisle Indian School, which he refers to as "Whiteman school." He is led down the city Main Street with the other Apaches, when a young girl runs up to him and gives him flowers. He never forgets that young girl and, unknown to him, she never forgets him. Several years later, he escapes from the school and they chance to meet when she boards a train that he jumps on to head back toward Arizona. This reunion leads to an adventure no one could predict. Read the book!

Whether you know Irwin's work or not, are an art afficionado or not, this is a great read for the curious and perceptually
aware.Weschler translates visual concepts into easily understandable language. His writing is clear and insightful and never falls into boring art jargon. This is no simple task for Irwin's work which is all about looking is not necessarily transferable on paper, but ultimately Weschler's writing does it justice. Weschler gives insight not only into the mind and heart behind this work but the personality that comprises Robert
Irwin. The book is like being in a restaurant and overhearing a really interesting conversation at the adjacent table so you don't resist the urge to eavesdrop and you stay and listen 'till the end.

still forgetting

I picked up this book in 1984 because it was on a reading list for an Art History class I was taking at Oberlin College. I stayed up all night in the library that night. I couldn't put it down. My mind has never been the same.

I still often think of it,tell stories from it and give it as a gift. I always say "skip the first chapter-it gets much better." If I remember right, the book begins with a description of Irwin's perfectionism when cleaning the engine of his car. I figure that will bore my friends.

I tell my students about Irwin's many years attempt to make the perfect line, to his wife's chagrin and his painting the back side of his paintings because it matters to him. They like the story of the riots that occured in South America due to the disorientation of his discs-concave and convex-the viewers couldn't tell where the wall started and the disc stopped. I have given the book as a graduation present.

I thought about this book at the mechanic the other day. My engine is very, very dirty.

I will never forget,forgetting. Great book.

A fascinating book about creativity and the act of creation

Wechsler is a terrific biographer for Irwin. For while Irwin is himself a voluble and willing subject, Wechsler's insights into the act of creation and the journey of an artist augment Irwin's own insights in an important and illuminating way.
Having had no prior knowledge of Irwin and never having seen his work before, I still found this a fascinating book about creativity and the act of creation. I give this book as a gift frequently to those people who love and appreciate art and artists in all disciplines (painting, film, theater, photography, sculpture, pottery etc.).

Equivalent of reality TV.

I am in a book club of women between 55 and 90, and none of us cared for this book, other than the parts about Eleanor Roosevelt. From all the postive reviews, I can only guess that it appeals more to younger women. My personal view, which may sound a little harsh, is that the author, whose one over-riding fear seems to be not winning at everything she does, wanted to write a book but needed material, so she created this concept of doing things she was afraid of. This seems to be a trend in publishing, perhaps started by "Eat, Pray, Love" and the book about the girl cooking Julia Child recipes (also see "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver) -- authors pitch an idea to publishers that involves setting up some kind of challenge for themselves for a year and then they write about it. It's the eqivalent of a reality TV show. Most of us found her challenges superficial and somewhat forced. One person commented "She went from writing about celebraties to trying to become one herself by writing a book about herself." Way too much narcisism here. She has good writing skills, but needs a subject that has some substance.

Inspiring Memoir About Facing Fears Big and Small

Normally I'm somewhat wary of "I tried __ for a year" memoirs, but this one is delightful, inspiring and offers some history lessons. When Noelle Hancock learns that her entertainment blogging job has ended, she's at a loss as to what to do. In therapy, she's trying to overcome her fears, and she decides to look to Eleanor Roosevelt for advice, latching on to the First Lady's prompt to do one thing each that scares you. Hancock doesn't detail 365 feats, but the ones she does are at turns dramatic (shark diving, trapeze work, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro), unnerving (working at a mortuary to conquer her fear of death), amusing (doing standup comedy is the thing she fears most) and more everyday (weaning herself off sleeping pills). Along the way she writes about her fears about whether her boyfriend's reporter job will always outshadow her and the future of their relationship.

What I appreciated most is that Hancock is not trying to tell everyone to apply Eleanor's advice, and she grapples constantly with being "ready" to face her fears, taking her last sleeping pill when she is forced to by the mountain climb. She isn't overly self-deprecating, but does bare her fears in a way that makes it almost impossible not to like her as a narrator--or look inward at one's own fears. She also shines a bit of light on some of the major accomplishments of Eleanor Roosevelt, and while the two are from very different times, the effect Eleanor has on the author is clear in her references and devotion to living according to her spirit. This memoir never feels predetermined, and Hancock's insights into her accomplishments are as worthy of attention as her feats themselves, especially relating to Kiliminjaro. She shows an empathy and compassion that extends to her friends and those she meets (including the dead) as well as to herself.
