Good for Newbies and Pros Alike

A nice guide to designing your own fabric to be printed by Spoonflower. The sample projects were very interesting and gave me some great ideas for my projects. The recipe card tea towels are a particularly great idea if you happen to have something written out by a beloved cook in your life. So many derivations from that simple idea have been teeming in my mind. My family had better watch out next Christmas!
As for the instructional quality. I'm a graphic design and prepress professional who has done a fair amount of training newbies over the years. The basic how-tos are detailed enough to get a beginner started without being overwhelming. This is a VERY good thing!
If you've never done graphic design on computers, I suggest supplementing this book with a beginner-level how-to book for the software you happen to be using. (Those "For Dummies" books are a good start.)

an excellent book for demystifying digitally-printed textiles

I suppose that i should begin with a few disclosures, as i am hardly an impartial reviewer. I bought the book at the book release party on-site at the Durham production facility. Spoonflower is a local company with offices literally just up the street from my house. I count more than one friend (and one alumna of the graduate program in which i teach) among their employees, and I have been a customer and designer of theirs for years. That said, i don't have any affiliation with this book and its authors beyond being a fan of the text.

So, what's the book like?

One could argue that it is a book-length infomercial for Spoonflower, which i suppose is technically true, in that there's a lot of information about how specifically one can use the company to produce textile designs, wallpaper, and gift wrap (the three products they print). But on a general level, there's an enormous amount of useful information about the basics of print designs--everything from how to use both analog and digital tools to create your designs, to how one might create a seamless repeat in a range of different configurations. The book does touch on some of the more "pro" programs for digital design, but also illustrates techiques and methods that are decidedly low-tech and non-intimdating for those who have no proficiency with, say, Photoshop.

The first section is a sort of overview of textiles and design--discussions of everything from types of fabrics one can print on (knits/wovens, fiber contents) to the definition of digital design terms like raster and vector based image files, hex codes, dpi, and so forth.

The structure of the second half of the book is project-based, with specific how-to craft projects, each of which addresses a different technique or medium. So, an example of a simple project for working with a digital photograph is the Doppelganger Dog Pillow (which involves printing a photo of your pet and making a pillow out of it), whereas a project addressing working with text involves creating a repeat for the Typographic Wrapping Paper.

Overall, it's an excellent book for demystifying digitally-printed textiles (and papers), which will appeal to hobby crafters, fashion designers, costumers, prop artisans, interior decorators, scrapbookers, and sewing enthusiasts. In terms of its specific appeal to theatre professionals, it's a good book to have in your arsenal, though it covers little new ground not already addressed by Kimberly Kight's Field Guide to Fabric Design.

Fabulous! I vote in Spoonflower's contest each week. I would look at the entries longingly wishing I could also design fabric. Well, now I can thanks to this wonderful book! Every step is spelled out in detail. Plus, there are many terrific projects included.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in designing and having fabric printed plus anyone interested in great fabric design projects!

When I Fall is AMAZING!

I know I said Ben was my favorite, then Luke, but seriously I LOVE Reed! He is so sweet, sexy, and irresistible. (Just had I put that out there before I review this book).

Reed is a sexy guy who has been burned in the worst possible way. He decides to hook up with chicks only one time and leave the kissing out of it. When his beast of an ex comes walking back into his life he is stunned stupid but luckily Beth is there to help him out.
Beth is sweet but tempting. She just found family she never knew about. Since her momma died she has only ever been alone. Once she finds out she has family she goes straight to them. One night when she is hanging out at the pub she meets Reed. After he is frozen when his ex walks in, Beth has an urge to help him. She kisses him and he is captivated.
These two go through a lot and so much of the storyline ties back to Ben, Mia, Nolan, Chase, Luke and Tessa. I love books that build on from each other. While reading this book I was laughing out loud, smacking my forehead and of course crying! This is an amazing book from the Bama Boy series. I absolutely love J. Daniels and can't wait to read more of what she puts out. I have never been disappointed and I always read her stuff in a day because I can't put it down.
YOU HAVE TO PICK UP THIS BOOK. Go ahead and one-click, you know you wanna!

In Review: When I Fall (Alabama Summer #3) by J. Daniels

I'm pretty sure I've said this when reviewing each book in the Alabama Summer series, but I'm gonna say it again here... I'm enjoying this series so freaking much. The setting, the characters, the stories, the swoons, the hot AF sexy times? It's all so good. (Which should be pretty apparent considering I read the first three books in a little under two days. #noregrets.)

Reed has been lurking in the background of the series so far and I was so excited to learn he was getting his own book. He was pretty much my favorite type of guy in books – the one where no one else exists for him once he falls for the heroine. Reed was a no strings attached, good time only guy at the beginning of the book. (The kind of guy I do not like quite as much.) I mean, he has his reasons as I learned later, but still. I do love watching that kind of guy get knocked on his ass though, and that's exactly what Beth does when she gets to town. (Yay!) What begins as an "I have to have her" thing turns into a "I can't be without her" thing and it was perfectly imperfect.

Beth's had a rough past. My heart hurt for her. Naturally I wanted only good things for her when she got to Alabama, where she moved in with her aunt and uncle. She was a strong woman, a survivor and she deserved good things. I wasn't sure Reed would be able to give her those good things, but as the story all played out, I'm convinced no one else could've done it better. From their first night in the bar to the way she insisted he allow her to pretend to be his girlfriend during his (evil) ex's engagement party and even further into the story, I loved these two. I loved how she pushed him and how he did the same for her. Of course, there were a couple times where I wanted to shake sense into both of them, but that's just part of the angst, right? I had a tough time putting this book down once I started reading it. I couldn't get enough of Reed or Beth or what was playing out between them.

Where I Fall was super hot. Reed had an incredibly dirty mouth and, well, y'all know how I like that. It also had some scenes that had me swooning all over the place and even a few that had me literally laughing out loud. You'll know them when you get to them. Mia, Ben, Tessa and Luke all play a part in this book, too, and it was wonderful to see what they've been up to since I finished their book. Life's progressing nicely for each of them and that just makes my heart happy. Such a great series. I'm really looking forward to CJ and Riley's book in What I Need. Come on, June. Get here.

Minor editing errors. Nothing too major.

Wow. Just wow. This was the best book of the series so far. ( hoping there are more to come). Each book in this series has gotten better than the last. The chemistry between the characters this author writes is amazing! I was drawn in very quickly and couldn't put this book down. I even found myself reading when I should have been working. Reed and Beth were both amazing characters. Each with their own issues I loved how they came together. Even if it was fake to start. I love that he obsessed over a kiss like it was the best moment in his entire life.

The book was riddled with intimate moments that made even me blush but they were so well written it wasn't over the top. That was just how hot these two were for each other. The banter between all the characters from the previous book was awesome as well. Loved getting a glimpse into where they are now.

Like I said before... I hope there is another book coming in this series. It is too good to end yet.

Thought provoking and practical

This book covers the intersection between community activism and design (focused on graphic design), told through clear, easy-to-read analysis of fascinating and inspiring case studies. It is also beautifully designed, no surprise.

The concise chapter on how to find funding for public interest design is particularly insightful, offering up some practical ideas for how designers can rethink their place in the economy, contribute to projects effecting social change, and still be business savvy.

This is light and it's silly (and totally preposterous) but it's a decent read. I had not read the first book but Holliday gave enough (but not too much) of the back story so that I could enjoy this without feeling as though I was missing something. Libby is an interesting character-more so than Marilyn Monroe, who should be more of a cautionary tale than a giver of advice. THanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. Try this if you'd like something a little different.

Same story, different star

The first book wasn't much, but this is even worse because it is just a clone of the Audrey Hepburn one. Furthermore, pantyhose weren't even invented until 1959, six years previous to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, movie. Marilyn wouldn't have had a clue...she'd be in hose and garter belts or corset.

An excellent addition to your famliy's library.

My mom has read us her favorite poetry for YEARS way back since before I can recall. It's just always been in our home at Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays. A few years before her passing, she began to compile a collection. This short collection showed up, and she --and then I--began typing the poems into a collection; there are some 300 + poems altogether. Enjoy!

About the Author
Carlos Coronel is currently the Lab Director for the College of Business Computer Labs at Middle Tennessee State University. He has more than 29 years of experience in various fields as a Database Administrator, Network Administrator, Web Manager, and Technology Specialist. He has taught courses in Web development, database design and development, and data communications at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Steven Morris completed his Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. from Auburn University. He has taught courses in Database Design and Development, Database Programming with Advanced SQL and PL/SQL, Systems Analysis and Design, and Database Management at the graduate and undergraduate levels at Middle Tennessee State University. He has many years of experience consulting on a database projects across a broad range of industries. Dr. Morris has published numerous professional articles and has served on the review boards of several journals.

Francis Glebas worked as a story artist for Disney Feature Animation on Aladdin, Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dinosaur, Treasure Planet and Hercules. He also directed Pomp and Circumstance starring Donald Duck in Fantasia 2000 and Piglet's BIG Movie. Francis is also an award-winning independent live action movie maker with almost 40 years' experience. He currently teaches storyboarding at Gnomon School of Visual Effects. Francis also works as a creative consultant, having worked with the Irish Government, Korean Government, General Motors, Los Alamos Labs, Walt Disney Imagineering and other film studios.

Love the flipbook + companion CD!

First of all, the book is a lot bigger than I thought. It just sticks out on my bookshelf lol, but I'm fine with it because I really love the flipbook section; it's really cute :P. Anyway, this is a great animation book for anyone interested to learn more about animation. I have this book and the Character Animation Crash Course by Eric Goldberg, and I find both books very helpful. Goldberg's book teaches something Glebas doesn't teach (more technical), and Glebas teaches something Goldberg doesn't. But I have to say I learned more from the Animator's eyes because the author covers stuff like storyboarding, adding color and sound which no other animation books cover. If you already have the animator's survival kit, you don't really need character animation crash course because they are more or less the same. The Animator's Eye is different though, you will totally learn something new from it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to further his or her knowledge about animation.

The book I've been waiting for

I worked in the industry back when before moving into a teaching career. I know the animation principles that any new animator must learn so I know what to look for in a text book. Over the years the text books I've assigned for the college animation courses I have taught have come and gone. A common problem is a lack of depth into the more intricate working of development and didactic graphics. There also is, quite often, a one size fits all approach to explanations of animation principles and methods.

The principles of animation are our tools. We use them to build our animations so once we have knowledge of a animation principle (such as squash & stretch) we can build anything we'd like with them or use them in a personal and more expressive way than others may choose to do.

Francis understands this. Francis book provides the necessary information new animators need to launch their learning experience without the "do it like this" verbiage. Francis gives the reader information on the tools with user friendly graphics that leaves the personal and particular "how to" decisions in the hands of the developing animation student. At last!

It's an excellent fun read, packed full of gotta have information on the universal principles of animation.Additionally he also has information on layout, planning and the classic components of camera, composition and design necessary in building an animation.That's quite a package.

The principles he shares are used in all forms of animation...2 and 3D, stop-motion and digital. We all use them so the information in this book has universal appeal and application.

It is the book I've been waiting for. It will be the assigned text in all of my animation courses from here on.

Covers It All

First off, you have to love the flip-book on the edge of the pages of The Animator's Eye. It works just like film but breaks it down. This book, the author Francis Glebas and his characters Iggy and Scared Bunny are a lot of fun, but don't let that fool you, this book is filled with a mass of serious information. When it comes right down to it, animation in the form of storytelling covers a huge amount of stuff just to get it get it done - and even more to make it "moving" and fun. This book gets "it". Even though a person could dig into any these areas for more info, the author gets what is takes to get started in animation and covers what is helpful to advance a career.

I'm coming from a background of drawing illustration skills that transitioned to graphic arts on a computer. I also have interests in photography and video. Not being wholly advanced in the animation world, I can only guess what level of experience would find interest in this book. Yet, given the range of information from drawing, to movement, to gestures, to color, to storytelling, to sound, to lip sync, to organization, to structure, to production, just to mention some of what Glebas covers, I think even the very advanced animator would find something to improve upon. For the beginner this should be a must. This book takes me back to some my earliest drawing classes and reinforces some of their very best principles in a more compelling and informative way, like the use of balance and weight to give life to mere lines. The author shows you how to create three dimensional characters with the illusion of life-like movement so as to avoid what he refers to as "zombies".

I like the way he builds from simple basics to get a character and story across. I love the emotional wheel. Art classes have gotten me used to the color wheel (which the author also takes great advantage of in the book) but I never thought to use a wheel for emotions, expressions, and gestures. Simple is better. I really like his use of post-it notes to produce a very simple but moving and easily edited story board. That makes so much organizational and productive sense. Like the author, I have always thought that tracing was a very valid method for learning the way others draw (which was sometimes frowned upon). He touches on helpful software to match your character with the appropriate color, sound, and environment that givs life and emotion to enhance and drive the animators vision. Glebas gives lots of helpful ideas to make animation work better and the process work more easily.

The accompanying DVD shows the finished animation along with the earlier working versions to give you some idea of what to look for and how to progress. One of my favorite things on the DVD is where the author makes a video of himself to show exaggerated emotions and lip movement to use for references for drawing believable character expressions and speech.

The Animator's Eye covers a lot of material, all with practical means to get professional results that will capture your audience's attention and sweep them off into a truly "believable" fantasy world just like Disney does.
