About the Author
JIM PARSHALL is a Senior Process Automation Engineer at Eli Lilly and Co. He is currently assigned to the Indianapolis Dry Products site, which serves as a development center for new tablet and capsule products and provides the manufacturing capacity for worldwide distribution. After coordinating the development of an automation and information technology strategy for the site, Jim is now planning strategic automation and information integration projects. He leads the corporate team responsible for overseeing a global supplier alliance with Rockwell Automation and is a member of the company's global process automation strategy team.

Before joining Eli Lilly, Jim worked as an automation engineer at Ben & Jerry's Homemade in St. Albans, Vt. He led the design and delivery of process control systems during the exciting startup of the company's newest and largest plant. As part of his process control and supervisory system responsibilities, Jim led the successful installation of an S88-aware batch control and management system.

He received his BSEE from Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute), and received his MSEE with an emphasis in manufacturing from Purdue University. Jim is an active participant in the World Batch Forum, and he is a member of the ISA SP95 standard committee on enterprise-control system integration.

LARRY LAMB is the Software Manager at Oakes Electric, a Rockwell Automation distributor in New England and New York. He is responsible for leading the business and technical aspects of providing technology-based solutions to customers.

Before joining Oakes, Larry was a controls engineer at Ben & Jerry's Homemade in St. Albans, Vt. His expertise drove the design of the control architecture at the new plant in St. Albans, and Larry was responsible for writing the process control and operator interface code for the plant production area.

Larry received his BSEE from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Written to be understood

Well, this was a technical book that was actually written to be understood. The authors were able to say what needs to be said in just 150 pages. That was great. There is no need to stuff a book with junk. The great physicist Ernest Rutherford said, "If you can't explain your physics to a barmaid it is probably not very good physics". That is true. Indeed, Jim and Larry were able to explain S88 to barmaid! That was quite an achievement. This book worth the price.

Very good for S88 introduction ...

Very good insight into S88, considering there isn't much else on the market and the author had to learn it from scratch and even then talk to the ISA S88 committee members. After going through this book in detail, I'm amazed that the ISA S88 committee members didn't realize they were creating an abstract standard with terminology that is so general that it's not understandable. Jim Parshall - two thumbs up. ISA S88 committee - thumbs down for detachment from reality.

I have been working with batch processes for 7 years and had heard a lot about S88. Because of that, understanding this book was very easy and I would have liked it to explain more deeply some of the points. Anyway, it awolled me to understand all the basic concepts and now I think I would be able to create a software that followed S88 and that inproved the way I define and program the processes.

But Stephen Greenblatt, brilliant scholar and author of Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare, reminds us that the "surviving traces" are "abundant but thin" as to known facts. He acknowledges the paradox of the many biographies spun out of conjecture but then produces a book so persuasive and breathtakingly enjoyable that one wonders what he could have done if the usual stuff of biographical inquiry--memoirs, interviews, manuscripts, and drafts--had been at his disposal. Greenblatt uses the "verbal traces" in Shakespeare's work to take us "back into the life he lived and into the world to which he was so open." Whenever possible, he also ushers us from the extraordinary life into the luminous work. The result is a marvelous blend of scholarship, insight, observation, and, yes, conjecture--but conjecture always based on the most convincing and inspired reasoning and evidence. This much-awaited new biography of the elusive Bard is brilliant in conception, often superb in execution, but sometimes—perhaps inevitably—disappointing in its degree of speculativeness. Bardolators may take this last for granted, but curious lay readers seeking a fully cohesive and convincing life may at times feel the accumulation of "may haves," "might haves" and "could haves" make it difficult to suspend disbelief. Greenblatt's espousing, for instance, of the theory that Shakespeare's "lost" years before arriving in London were spent in Lancashire leads to suppositions that he might have met the Catholic subversive Edmund Campion, and how that might have affected him—and it all rests on one factoid: the bequeathing by a nobleman of some player's items to a William Shakeshafte, who may, plausibly, have been the young Shakespeare. I finished "Will in the World" yesterday night. Its reading was an experience very similar to fall in love or to discover the real meaning of E·equals mc square. For years I've been reading several studies about Will besides his works but I never had come to realize the power of the historical context to understand in earthly and mundane terms what is that we call genius or magic, what do they really mean.

Stephen Greenblatt is the author of another five stars book, "The swerve." I read it, I really enjoyed it, and looking for something else by him I found this authentic jewel.

"Will in the world" is a literary voyage to the world in which Shakespeare lived. So you live there for the time it takes you to read four hundred pages with the fear and the uncertainty of the Elizabethan England and that of her successor, James I. But not only that but also his marriage with Anne Hathaway, the life and death of his only son, Hamnet, and the lives of his daughters Susanna and Judith. Did they influence his plays? If not, then who?

Professor Greenblatt rebuilds the Shakespearean world for you. And to do that he deals with laws, persecutions, innuendos, influences, and so on and on. It is the work, in fact, that you have to do if you want to know how Shakespeare became Shakespeare. This doesn't imply that Will was the product of his time, not at all. It implies that the epoch influences the genius as influences the war, the trade or the economy, which doesn't mean that they do not exist today.

Now, to convince you, he incorporates several, maybe hundreds of quotes taken from the plays Shakespeare wrote all by himself or in collaboration. They are beautiful in themselves but as long as professor Greenblatt explains the reason behind the texts, they get something like a new taste, glow or brilliance. When I said that I had read several works and studies on the topic, I really mean it. I've read all the Will's plays and I have my favorites and my quotes and my own interpretations. I read every single book by Harold Bloom on the topic and several works that study and explore the life and the works of the bard. I am a bardolater as Bloom declares himself to be. So, what I'm saying about "Will in the World" is exactly that: a brilliant work. Deep, well written, lovely, unforgettable.

I read it in kindle version, now I need the paperback edition, really. I need the pages and the real ink.

Greenblatt has a great idea. There's so little to go on with Shakespeare that biographies have been halting, and even the idea of using biographical information to interpret Shakespeare has been on the edge of taboo. Pick up Bloom's Shakespeare, and you can see the delight at tweaking authority leap off the page when he trots out a chestnut about Marlowe being killed by the Elizabethan CIA. The degree of critical insight through biography and historical context brought Bloom's 800 page book by is dwarfed by a short chapter of WiW.

Even better (and this is the true test of an hypothesis), the biographical lodestars brought forth are predictive in works not mentioned. That's sort of a strange claim, but I'm going through it at the moment, so here's the current example - I bet there will be more. One of the main events in the book is WS's relationship with the Earl of Southampton, whom it is affirmed was a patron of WS and the addressee of Venus and Adonis, and some Sonnets (I think that part's affirmed, but the early, non (actually less) sexual ones). ESH was being pushed into a marriage, and he was delaying. WS was supposed to coax him through poetry closer to the marriage, and ended up possibly falling in love with ESH himself. That last bit is more interesting than salient to my point, but nice to have a little scandal. So I'm reading All's Well that Ends Well, and bam! the central action is a courtier that refuses to marry someone the king is commanding him to marry using various delaying tactics, etc. Seems a cartoonish bit of court intrigue in the play, but the real life example is undeniably there in WiW, but unclaimed for AWEW. It's absolutely ridiculous to believe that Shakespeare, unlike all other writers, did not use his life as a primary source for his fiction just because we have so little documentation of it. Greenblatt calls BS on that thought and does everything he can to piece together what's likely and put it on the table.

What seems amazing to me is how airtight his suppositions seem. I think that's a combination of knowledge of the time, knowledge of the work, the discretion not to go out too far on a limb, but the courage to make a claim that fits common sense and has explanatory power. If you're considering a Shakespeare dive, I think this is the book you want as a companion. It's a little better if you have some of the plays under your belt, you'll be nodding a lot more. But it's nice to know the man and the time as you're reading at a higher level than the scattered details that critical volumes of the plays will give.

I had looked forward with great anticipation to reading this book. Firstly it was written by the author of The Swerve, one of the most brilliant, thought-provoking books I have ever read. Secondly, the subject matter was ideal for a Shakespeare student and fan like me. Rightly, the book relates the history of England during the second half of the 16th century - in well-researched and amazing detail - but it does so by using minor characters carrying out in most cases inconsequential actions of these times. Will Shakespeare, our leading man, never appears on stage and is only "referred to" occasionally as "Shakespeare would probably have seen this, or done that." Rather like writing the histories of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and only occasionally referring to the supposed happenings of Hamlet.
More than a tad disappointing. But I'm sure Mr. Greenblatt will make up for it in his next book.

Great piece of history in the palm of your hand

This is a fantastic 75th anniversary book to help celebrate DC Comics. The book contains 100 ready to frame posters, with additional covers of the series mentioned on the back of the posters. The ready to frame posters are perforated and tear right out of the book. They measure about 13 x 11. The covers look like scans of the vintage comics, and some show their age. I guess they decided to show comic covers with creases to depict the age of the comic. I enjoy that better than having them digitally airbrushed. It looks more like a piece of classic art. If you are hesitant in buying the book because you don't know what ready to frame covers there are inside, here is the list of the 100 covers in the order they show up in the book.

A Great Collection -- the family loves it!

I'm now the coolest guy in my house.

I was most intrigued by this book's seeming inclusion of so many of the classic, even iconic DC covers over the last 75 years. It includes 100 covers (in a ready to frame size and perforated for removal it that is your goal), and they move along at approximately a cover per year (though not adhered to rigorously, and the extra covers make it possible to slow down during the epic times). Each cover has an explanation on the back that informs of the date, artist, and all of the significant surrounding facts about the cover, with two other smaller covers that provide context.

But the fun was only beginning when I opened it up at home. I was able to show my wife some of the more "fun" moments in DC history -- she love "groovy" Emma Peel Wonder Woman from 1968, and got a snicker out of little Speedy and his heroin needle when DC "attacks youth's greatest problem . . . DRUGS!"

But the kids like it a whole lot more than I was anticipating. They sat on the bed and lovingly turned the pages over and over, and have carried all around the house. The giant pages really pop and make them want to ask questions about Krypto or Jimmy Olsen. They tend to be much more fascinated by the older covers than the more recent ones.

Most of all, this book does a good job of combining the "essentials," the must have covers from DC history, but also the more odd ones that make for good conversation with comic book fans as well as "civilians."

Got this and used it as a wall border in my son's bedroom. ALL the posters look amazing and I like every single one of them! They would also look VERY nice framed! The book is HUGE!!! Highly recommended!!! A+

Very well done

Any homebrewer that enjoys making and drinking pale ales needs this book. As an avid reader of the Classic Beer Styles Series, I feel that the author has taken some of the best aspects of the previous 15 books and combined it all into one, making this one of the most useful in the series. The second edition of the book is a tremendous improvement over the first.
The book is longer than most of the others in the series, but only because the author broke the pale ale category into many subcategories. He does not discriminate - he explains all pretty much equally. The recipes are different and thoroughly presented; the method of dispensing each is even specified. All in all, a very useful reference for the homebrewer.

A Well-done book on the Topic

Terry Foster's "Pale Ale" is to be commended for it's excellent treatment of this historical style of beer, and it can be recommended both to the style's homebrewers and enthusiasts.

Foster writes about the history of pale ale with verve. This section shines among all the others. I know of no source that is more informative nor more engrossing on the subject of the history of this beer, or even english beer in general (though I have not read any other books in this series.) Foster not only explains the evolution of pale ale in isolation, but also its relationship with other beers that have been its commercial rivals through out history.

Foster is a clear advocate of the British Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and shows his CAMRA biases. But this bias never taints a candid discussion of Pale Ale as discovered both in England and the U.S. Indeed, as an American with no experience with Real Ale, I quite enjoyed his discussion of Real Ale: while reading, I more than once considered how to brew and (especially) to serve a bitter in the "real" way--a subject which he discusses in some detail. In addition, Foster is an open advocate of innovation--never does he scold the brewer who wants to innovate on this classic style, though he does warn against calling serious deviations "Pale Ales", something he considers both harmful and misleading.

Homebrewers with a great deal of experience with pale ales will not find themselves learning a great deal that's new about pale ale brewing. The book is not intended for those with no experience brewing: if you are trying to learn to brew for the first time, get Charlie Papzian's "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" or John J. Palmer's "How to Brew". In general, I found the chapter on Brewing Pale Ales to be pretty standard. This book won't tell you anything about making a pale ale if you've already absorbed Ray Daniel's "Designing Great Beer." On the other hand, those with a few but not many homebrews to their credit and with a zeal for developing their own recipes will likely find themselves inspired with new ideas after reading this book. (However, I would really recommend Designing Great Beer first.)

The book contains recipes, one for each sub-style in the pale ale family, but the book emphasizes recipe creation over delivering recipes. None of the recipes are purported "clones." All the recipes have both extract and all-grain versions. I haven't tried the recipes but all look as though they will produce good pale ales. However, the recipes section of the book is short, a fact for which this reviewer was grateful, but those seeking a tomb of recipes should look elsewhere.

This is a very well done book on beer. Regarding the history of pale ale and it's serving, it surpasses all other works I know. On the other topics it covers, it rivals the competition as far as pale ale is concerned. Why not five stars? Well, I feel that the section on brewing pale ale could have been considerably more probing. That chapter didn't go beyond Daniel's Designing Great Beers and I felt as though that should have been a possibility, indeed a reality, in a book dedicated to Pale Ale.

You will be getting good information on Hops, both varieties and flavor characteristics, and malts, their flavor and color contributions. Terry Foster does an excellent job of explaining the science behind ale brewing which is applicable to most styles of brewing.

Cute little book

I just bought this book for my 16 month old little girl and she already has had me read it to her over and over and over again. She loves the way that the book has the pulls that reveal other pictures! It is a great brief bible book for those "little ones" who are just learning about bible stories!
