About the Author

Michael Kimmel is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University, State University of New York. A leading researcher and writer on gender and men and masculinity, he is the author of numerous books and articles including The Gendered Society Reader, Fifth Edition (with Amy Aronson, OUP, 2013), Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men (2009), and Manhood in America: A Cultural History, Third Edition (OUP, 2012).

A great book for any gender class, but wordy

A great book that studies gender for any gender class you may take. My only issue with it was that the author seemed to go into great detail about a study or theory and then he would finish it with, but that's not correct, then launch into another story about another theory. I just felt like it could be slightly condensed to make more sense and make it slightly easier to read.

If you can't trust some of it, can you trust any of it?

It is very clear that the author is ill informed about non-sociology fields that he makes assertions about when it comes to masculinity. Honestly, he shouldn't be discussing gender in literature if he isn't properly educated in it. Of course femininity is discussed when it comes to the Bronte sisters. Their fiction is centered around Victorian femininity. Of course masculinity isn't discussed when we talk about Dickens. His fiction centers around political commentary. But if you talk about Hemingway, Breece D'J O'Brien, or Bram Stoker, you're going to discuss masculinity as much, if not more than you discuss femininity with the Bronte sisters. Kimmel's choice to selectively approach a subject he knows little about (or knows a lot about and decided to unethically use to advance his thesis) does not further the study of gender from a sociological standpoint, but rather hinders understanding of it. Anyone who prints false information that is taught in any classroom should be ashamed of themselves.

Adult/High School–Many kids with physical, mental, and learning disabilities have ridden the short bus to special-education classes, signaling that they were different, singled out, not normal. Mooney was one of those short bus children who hated school because he was dyslexic and couldn't read until he was 12. In 2003, a few years after he graduated from Brown University, he cowrote a book on learning disabilities and began a career of public speaking on the subject. Then he set out on a journey. He bought an old short bus and traveled from Los Angeles to Maine to Washington and back to L.A., stopping to visit with various people who were also not normal. Along the way, he confronted his own preconceptions and assumptions about people with autism, Down syndrome, deafness and blindness, ADHD, and other so-called disabilities. In this book, he deals with the question of What is normal? As a special education teacher, I was very excited to read this book. As much as we love and accept our students for who they are, its often hard to see and understand life through their eyes. I thought this book may help me do so and provide me with relatable experiences, but it did not live up to my expectations. It was a good story overall ... but was a slow read.

Over all, and indepth. Very good to excallant!

One of the most intense, and accurate histories of this fine, and magnificant fighting force. He doesn't pull any punchies when dealing with the history of the Country of France, and the early history of their: "Foreign Legion". He has done a exremely good job with this book! The only real critisim may be in some miss identificatiion of some of the weapons, and the calibers used therein. AK-47's didn't come into the Indo-China Pennisula, and South Viet-Nam until about the mid-sixties, and then on. Some of the larger calibers were attirubued to the anti-aircraft variety. Maybe, they were used in the attacks? I would never condemn them. After having been such a situation I would recommend any and all to read this fine military history. Find out what "Patria Legio Nostra" really means. Thank you. --JeanPierre

Decent book.

The book is written a bit oddly by starting with the Indochina war that would end up being the US Vietnam War. An excellent compilation of the history of thr French Foreign Legion, it covers the high points of the FFL history and gives a glimpse of the struggles that forged one of the finer fighting forces in the world. Still, parts of the book feel directionless, possibly due to the directionless nature of the Legion in its history. The author definitely drives in the idea that the legion is the successful black sheep of the French armed forces.

Great book, but terrible construction...

This book is great and very informative. I was required to purchase it for a class, and I have found it very helpful in giving strategies that I can implement with my students quickly. The book is well organized, and easy to read. I'm glad I own it. However, the book is falling apart. I use the book often, but I wouldn't say I'm rough on it. I don't throw it around and it stays at home on my desk. With normal page turning, during the first use I had three pages fall out. I'm constantly having to tape pages back in, and it makes turning other pages awkward. It is frustrating!

Awesome sauce

Very great book and I highly recommend it. An ESL teacher's must-have. This book has helped me to address multiple points of entry formerly known as "differentiation" in NYC public schools. The book is easy to read with short chapters. The best part is it has lesson plans that are right on the money unlike plans that I've looked at on websites for ideas that require a complete overhaul. Great book.

Transported to a beautiful world

I loved this book so very much and absolutely hated that it ended! Bailey starts where Sweet Oblivion left us, then takes us on an emotional roller coaster that had my stomach in knots until the very end.

She weaves her magic throughout the story. Bailey just doesn't write, she brings the story alive with her descriptions. I love having a movie play out when I read, it is what makes me read everything an author writes, and Bailey is definitely one of those authors.

What I liked about the book: Mycah! I loved him in Sweet Oblivion and I still love him in Sweet Escape! Several of my fellow readers became discouraged with him, albeit briefly, but I never did. I love that we get to spend more time with Rydan and Naminé! I believe their characters really come forth in this book, and you get to fall in love with them.

What I didn't like: Nari drove me BSC! Now, anyone who reads my reviews know that I love it when an author makes me angry, or makes me feel any strong emotion. That means that they have written the book so well that I was able to really get that picture into my mind. That is the case here. Just because a character or event ticks me off though doesn't mean I didn't love the book. These things had to happen for a reason, the story had to be developed and well, she IS an 18 year-old girl. I lost patients with them when I was one.

Would I recommend this book: Absolutely! This is such a magical series. It is filled with mystery, romance, and adventure. I believe anyone, young or old, can enjoy this journey!

where shall i start firstly i loooooove this book and i know you will to its just amazing u can never get tired of reading if you read the first one you'll know what i mean the suspense in here is amazing the shock and excitement truly unbelievable with that being said i loved the characters you get to know and meet Naminé in this book and she is an amazing person Very loyal to her home and family and very kind and caring and beautiful and shes very close with her brother there relation ship is just as amazing as nari and Rydan's then there's nari who is a bit emotional in this book but yet she is still strong and has developed so will learning more of who she truly is and her powers she will be going through some really rough times yet that wont stop her from finishing her journey and mission:) we get to learn allot about Rydan as well in here and what makes him so protective with nari towards the end one of many shocks to com, *wiggles eyebrows*yet is it possible there could be some feeling coming out with him and Naminé;) now for the one and only.....MYCAH NIGHTLY DUN DUN DUN....we all now about his accent first right ladies *looks around* OK good we all know now,... now allot of people say you MIGHT hate him in this book but do try not to loos hope in the poor guy if you pay close attention you will be able to see whats truly going on when you read the book you'll understand but for those of you that will get mad WARNING...i give you a warning that when you do get towards the middle of the book do not whats so ever continue to read with the phone/kindle or whatever electronic device in your hand cause i promise you now you will throw it against the wall or punch something;) and with hat being said those are the words i use to describe this book and its emotions..
AMAZING, OUTSTANDING, SHOCKING, SAD, HAPPY, MAD, ANGRY, SUSPENSEFUL, EXITING, ASTONISHING, SURPRISING...YUP it is one hell of an amazing emotional roller coaster journey it will have you biting your nails pulling your hair out, banging your head against the wall, screaming at the book and shouting, and jumping up and down from excitement, and of course *hands you a stack of napkins * you will need those and maybe more ladies even gents you'll be drooling in a particular scene with the sexy rydan oh and towards the end *hands u water bucket* you might need this encase you faint prepare for mycah nightly to unleash his sexiness if you think hes hot you aint seen nothing man;))

OH....MY.....FREAKING.....GOODNESS!!!! This book is AH-MAZ-ING!!!

I loved Sweet Oblivion, book one in this series, but Sweet Escape??? BLEW ME AWAY!!

You know going in to book two is always a little iffy. Sometimes they do just as good as book one and then there are those that just can't live up to what book one did.

ANNNNND then you have Sweet Escape....ROCKS YOUR FREAKIN WORLD FANTASTIC!!

Are you getting how I feel about this book yet?? LOL...OK...let me continue...

I was so excited to get back to the mystical, enchanting world that Bailey created in which we travel through the life of two young women, Nari and Namine.

Told in dualing POVs, we get to see what is happening to each of these interesting girls and then, finally, we see how their worlds intersect.

At the end of Sweet Oblivion, we were left hanging, finding out exactly who Mycah and Rydan really were. This left me wanting Sweet Escape direly and when I stepped back in to the pages to find out what was going on with my beloved characters, I couldn't put it down until I devoured the whole thing.

So many questions were answered yet at the same time so many new ones have formed. Knowing this is only book 2 out 4 in this series, there are still so many events that will have to pass for us to get to the happily ever after...AND Bailey...yes....there better be an HEA!!! ;)

Being able to make you FEEL as you are a part of the story, wrap you up in it; snug and tight...knowing that it will break you in two to leave it once it is over.

Yes, this is what it is like reading Sweet Escape. You fall in love with these characters. You want so much for them and get sooo mad when they disappoint you. When you have connections that strong for them, then you know that the author has captured you for an eternity.

Getting to know more about Nari, Namine, Rydan, and of course Mycah drives you through each chapter, soaking up the every adventure that each of these journey on. I was holding my breath through countless moments, screaming at a certain hottie that pissed me off, and sighing for relief when things started to unravel.

I loved this book and Bailey Ardisone is one of those authors that no matter what she puts in front of me, I know it will be a book that will knock my socks off.
