A sturdy, inexpensive printing of an excellent textbook

I teach a course in Applied Statistics (Computer Science and Software Engineering) using this book. The book's explanations are clear, the examples are well-chosen and there is a large collection of exercises. There are answers for about half the exercises in the back of the book, and the publisher sells a reasonably-priced student manual with full solutions to this half of the exercises.

In this note, I'm reviewing the 8th Economy Edition, an Asian reprint of the American book that sells at a much lower cost. Several of my students use this edition instead of the American 8th and I have a copy of it. The book is paperback, so it is not indestructible, but all of the copies I've seen are standing up well to heavy use. The print is clear. The graphics are greyscale rather than the American edition's color, but I don't see any resulting ambiguity or loss of information. Overall, this edition appears to be a fully-functional substitute for the full-price textbook.

Recommend purchasing any other statistics book

As a former student of statistics, I do not recommend purchasing this text. The book possesses multiple grammatical errors (many of which confuse the context of the problem), multiple incorrect answers provided in the back of the book, and multiple mistakes in the given information for a problem. This book will utilize variables without explanation, pose "real world" problems with little to no contextual background required to solve the problem, and skip many important topics vital to real world applications. I am currently writing to the editor in an effort to receive a refund for this book. I would NOT recommend this text to any student or professional.

Not Good

This is probably the second worst textbook I have ever read. I have struggled through the third chapter. In some cases, the text seems as though it was written for elementary school math covering set therory: extremely detailed and excessively verbose. In other cases, the text throws out examples without explaining any reasoning, or any how or why a formula is used.

The text continually refers to examples in previous sections, which forces the reader to search back through the text. The interuption is distracting and annoying. In many cases, the page numbers where the example can be found are not given. The text also does this with the exercises, forcing the student to wear-out the pages. Sometimes, I feel as though I need two copies of the textbook so I don't waste so much time thumbing back and forth.

I have ended up reading and re-reading the text while trying to understand some of the concepts and rational. In some areas, the author does not explain anything. While other times, the text continues for pages explaining things that an elementry school graduate should know. I am waiting to see multiplication tables in future chapters. All the while, some college level information is brushed-over. I typically need to work several exercises and beat my head against the wall a few times until I go ah ha! Why didn't the author explain this.

With textbooks like this, it is no wonder engineers have a reputation for poor communication skills.

MARK NEWMAN is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Derby and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. This really works and makes sense!

This book is so easy to read (funny) and to understand. I'm walking everyday and losing bodysize within the first week. David tells you clearly why losing "weight" doesn't matter...it's bodysize that counts. Take two people who weigh 140lbs and one can fit in a size 8 slacks and one in a size 16...because of bodysize, as in toned muscles take up less space than globs of fat. You have to read it to get the whole picture. It's wonderful and no more dieting! Just walk as fast as you can, at a comfortable pace everyday for as long as you can. (Everyday that will vary)I love his idea of the turtle wins the race everytime. Trust me this is the way to go. Easy, no pressure, just put one foot in front of the other everyday. It was just what I'd been looking for. No change in diet...only don't start eating more than you always have and you'll be ok.Gotta go now and walk...bye.

It's plain and simple...

READ THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT YOUR OLD BODY BACK OR IF YOU WANT THE BODY YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED WITHOUT CHANGING THE WAY YOU EAT.....I gained alot of weight when I got married, and more when I got pregnant. And I couldn't understand that because I hadn't changed the way I was eating (I have always ate "good" if you know what I mean) and I was gaining weight. And this has always been bad on my self esteem, because honestly, I had a nice figure before and men have always "favored" my nice "rear" and thighs (and my build altogether) I used to be pretty darn happy with the way I looked...not anymore. I have been wantin the old body back for over 3 years now. Well, the answer has always been right in front of my face, and I knew what it was: When I was single I was rippin' and runnin' all the time and was getting exercise all the time to keep me thin...but since I got married and settled down my activities dramatically slowed. So it MAKES 100% GOOD SENSE that walking like David says alone and not having to change your eating habits, can keep you thin. The book just kind of "Hammers" this obvious point in your head (which is good for us lazy folks) and gets you MOTIVATED and gets you out there..... and he makes the book very enjoyable to read with some humor. And walking DOES make you feel GREAT...I walked last summer and lost 12lbs, and now that I have read his book, I am gettin back out there TO STAY!........IF YOU WANT TO FINALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR WEIGHT AND SAY GOODBYE TO DIETING (that HAS NEVER worked, and is HORRBILE to go through)...BUY THIS BOOK>>>NOW NOW NOW!!!!! And by the way...THANK YOU DAVID RIVES!!!!!! I will love you for it in the end!! :) I will be back to give another review and brag about how many sizes I have dropped!! :)
Update 3-20-02
I told you I'd be back! The Good news: I lost 15 more lbs just walking (no diet change) every day, using the "Walk Yourself Thin" idea. And it's SO true what the book says about how you will pick up your distance cause your body get used to it...I was up to 2 miles a day. That's alot for someone that never exercised. The bad news: I can't stick to anything very long, and quit walking after hot weather came...but I plan to get back out there since the weather is nice again for walking. I have about 15-20lbs to lose this year, and I hope I can get it all gone forever, cause I haven't gained back anything I lost. So, I will be back to update you again. BUY THIS BOOK! It's SO true!

A simple and direct read.

In _Walk Yourself Thin_, Rives presents his main thesis--walk, walk, and walk some more--in, well, the vernacular. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing; quite the contrary, it succeeds in providing the reader some straight-talk about personal fitness, of which there is always too little. As I read this book, I also was struck with how prescient Rives' presentation is. Recent medical studies have inquired as to which of the following, if only ONE was acheived, would provide the most benefit: getting more exercise, losing weight, improving diet, or quitting smoking. Exercise was the (perhaps surprising) conclusion of the study, and Rives stresses this point clearly. Start, and keep, walking and work out the other details in time.
The only reason I give the work 4 stars is that there is no mention of walking technique. This may not seem like a great oversight, but for those who are significantly overweight, a short bit about techniques to help prevent injury would be welcome. All in all, however, a great read and definitely worth the money.
As a personal note, although it's too early to notice any significant results on the program (I've only been on it for a few weeks.), my energy level has noticeably risen, and I've been feeling great. I should also note that this is the only fitness program I've ever been on in which I LOOK FORWARD to exercising. Who can beat that? Just keep on walking...

About the Author
Rachel Ignotofsky grew up in New Jersey on a healthy diet of cartoons and pudding. She graduated with honors from Tyler School of Art’s graphic design program in 2011. Now she lives in beautiful Kansas City, Missouri, where she spends all day drawing and learning as much as she can. She has a passion for taking dense information and making it fun and accessible and is dedicated to creating educational works of art.

Rachel is inspired by history and science and believes that illustration is a powerful tool that can make learning exciting. She uses her work to spread her message about education, scientific literacy, and powerful women. She hopes this book inspires girls and women to follow their passions and dreams.

INTRODUCTION

Nothing says trouble like a woman in pants. That was the attitude in the 1930s, anyway; when Barbara McClintock wore slacks at the University of Missouri, it was considered scandalous. Even worse, she was feisty, direct, incredibly smart, and twice as sharp as most of her male colleagues. She did things her way to get the best results, even if it meant working late with her students, who were breaking curfew. If you think these seem like good qualities for scientist, then you are right. But back then, these weren’t necessarily considered good qualities in a woman. Her intelligence, her self-confidence, her willingness to break rules, and of course her pants were all considered shocking!

Barbara had already made her mark on the field of genetics with her groundbreaking work at Cornell University, mapping chromosomes using corn. This work is still important in scientific history. Yet while working at the University of Missouri Barbara was seen as bold and unladylike. The faculty excluded her from meetings and gave her little support with her research. When she found out they would fire her if she got married and there was no possibility of promotion, she decided she had had enough.

Risking her entire career, she packed her bags. With no plan, except an unwillingness to compromise her worth, Barbara went off to find her dream job. This decision would allow her to joyously research all day and eventually make the discovery of jumping genes. This discovery would win her a Nobel Prize and forever change how we view genetics.

Barbara McClintock’s story is not unique. As long as humanity has asked questions about our world, men and women have looked to the stars, under rocks, and through microscopes to find the answers. Although both men and women have the same thirst for knowledge, women have not always been given the same opportunities to explore the answers.

In the past, restrictions on women’s access to education was not uncommon. Women were often not allowed to publish scientific papers. Women were expected to grow up to exclusively become good wives and mothers while their husbands provided for them. Many people thought women were just not as smart as men. The women in this book had to fight these stereotypes to have the careers they wanted. They broke rules, published under pseudonyms, and worked for the love of learning alone. When others doubted their abilities, they had to believe in themselves.

When women finally began gaining wider access to higher education, there was usually a catch. Often they would be given no space to work, no funding, and no recognition. Not allowed to enter the university building because of her gender, Lise Meitner did her radiochemistry experiments in a dank basement. Without funding for a lab, physicist and chemist Marie Curie handled dangerous radioactive elements in a tiny, dusty shed. After making one of the most important discoveries in the history of astronomy, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin still got little recognition, and for decades her gender limited her to work as a technical assistant. Creativity, persistence, and a love of discovery were the greatest tools these women had.

Marie Curie is now a household name, but throughout history there have been many other great and important women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Many did not receive the recognition they deserved at the time and were forgotten. When thinking of physics, we should name not only Albert Einstein but also the genius mathematician Emmy Noether. We should all know that it was Rosalind Franklin who discovered the double helix structure of DNA, not James Watson and Francis Crick. While admiring the advances in computer technology, let us remember not only Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, but also Grace Hopper, the creator of modern programming.

Throughout history many women have risked everything in the name of science. This book tells the stories of these scientists, from ancient Greece to the modern day, who in the face of “No” said, “Try and stop me.”

Read This With Your Daughter

I bought this for my second-grade daughter who loves science. At first glance she was turned off by the small type but a few minutes later came back and wanted me to read with her. For an elementary schooler it will likely be a read together book for a while. Which is fine since we've just read a few pages and it opened up opportunities to discuss all sorts of things, about science and society, and piqued our interest to look up additional pictures and facts on the Internet. I am learning too! And it is a beautiful book to hold and look at.

Full of beautiful illustrations and great information. It's obvious how much care and attention was put into the spread for each of the scientists. I can see myself as a kid spending hours with this book. So many great surprises.

So much information.....

I read a great book on the same subject, water, a while ago. Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty! gave me a lot of useful information but somehow, although we think that there is not much to know about water other than the fact that we should drink 2 liters a day, I felt compelled to read a bit more and I was right! I have to say that I wasn't sure that one could add a lot of information to the book of Dr. Batman's book but boy, was I wrong..... This book is very well written without repetitions, which are one of the biggest problems of modern books! Especially the chapter on mineral and spring waters is very interesting; it gives the reader information about mineral and spring water in a number of countries. Then there are lists for those interested in for example waters rich in calcium, waters rich in magnesium, waters rich in silica, waters rich in iron, manganese, lithium, etc.

There are several cures according to what you want to achieve. You have for example the Hydration and Deacidification Remedy if you want to deacidify the internal cellular environment of the body, Hydration and Remineralization Remedy, etc. One thing I didn't understand was how one finds out if one suffers from extracellular thirst or intracellular thirst. Without knowing that one doesn't know whether to add salt to the drinking water or not. I read that chapter several times but I still don't understand how to decide which thirst one suffers from.

As far as cholesterol goes I think that it is now fully known that the food one eats doesn't change a thing in the amount of cholesterol in the body. There are a few very interesting books on this matter! If the liver makes a lot more cholesterol than we will ever be able to eat why do experts still go on telling us that the food we eat does influences the amount of cholesterol in the body? Very annoying!

The bottom line is that we need to be very well informed and not take all the official information we get from governments for granted, like drink 2l of water a day! I started drinking much more water and started having health problems at the same time so even with water one needs to be careful and needs to know what one is doing!
